Yes, bend them back on themselves so they are pointing up, when you put the fitting back into the ceiling they will spring back down and hold the fitting up

I was angry....No in all seriousness I was stupid didn't know how to change the lamp inside, so I took it out to see, only realising after you just turn front anti-clock wise and it lets you change it. So I needn't have removed it at all at least I know now for next time.
