car - focus 1.4 y reg

issue - wouldn't start. starter motor turns over but engine doesn't even try to catch. can feel its pumping air around so pistons moving up n down i reckon. nothing went bang etc.... turned it off one day.... went to turn it on the next day... nothing.

i've been given an idea of what it might be...

what say you?

Can you still hear the fuel pump prime when you turn it to ignition position 2?

Well you should b-able to see if the timing belt has snapped pretty easily.

How many miles has the car done?

As already suggested it's fairly easy to tell if the timing belt has snapped, just remove the belt cover on the left hand side of the engine block.

So essentially OP you are asking what could be wrong with your car and how much it will cost based on it not starting?

First check the spark plug, is it wet ( with fuel): Probably coil pack.
Is it dry: Probably doesn't get the fuel, check fuel pump.

Highly unlikely to be the coil pack - if it's not firing at all then both halfs of the coil pack would have had to fail simultaneously.

Could be numerous different causes though - as people have said you need to narrow it down to one of the three things needed for a petrol engine to run: fuel, spark and compression.
