Guess what I just did

the price was just a wild stab in the dark, got no idea how much 4890s are these days, sure you can find some good deals if you have a good look around. true the driver support can be testing at times, running older 10.4 drivers personally but not getting any noticable crossfire issues like micro-stuttering or anything such as that, hell only problem i get is insane amounts of heat (101*C before playing starcraft II but i think might have clogged heatsink). guess the problem remains for me personally, is the GTX 480 really £100 better and does DX11 mean anything? experiences with DX10 tell me to ignore DX11 for the most part and i can't see why without needing DX11 the GTX 480 is the better option? pretty sure you could find 4890s second hand for fair bit less than retail price and that makes the decision even more difficult to justify. hell i personally got this 4870X2 for £130, perfect condition, so in a perfect world lets say one could get another for same price. £260 for 4870X2 crossfire setup which sounds like a pretty good deal to be honest. only things that let that sort of a setup down is A) insane amounts of heat B) insane amounts of space C) insane amounts of power and D) not really great scaling for quad-fire, its not the technology thats flawed, just the drivers powering it. also be honest, what sort of setup requires that sort of power anyways? at the end of the day it just comes down to what do you want from your system, don't you want a top of the range powerhouse with no expense spared? or a potent system with some slightly out-dated componants? both complete the task in hand equally well, just personally taste i guess...:)

if ATI got their fingers out of their behinds and actually came up with some killer crossfire friendly drivers, would turn the GTX 480 away completely, but since they haven't (yet) then logically its the best option, unless you already happened to have crossfire capable motherboard and one 4890, in which case add another, bobs your uncle, save yourself a couple hundred quid.

True to some extent but dx11 is basically dx10 done properly. The added effects of dx11, namely tesselation and proper depth of field effects aren't amazing but the rendering pathways for dx11/10/9 stuff is where it comes into its own. Basically its multithreading done properly.

Personally, I'd buy the 480 as you get dx11, physicsX and CUDA, the later being immense if you use photoshop and other compatible programs.

Gotta remember though, if someone is looking at buying a 480, price isn't an issue in the first place :P

guys quick guestion, my MSI afterburner is not showing core volts? I m guessing I ll need the beta for that as I only got 1.6.1

and wtf is kombuster O_o
some kind of benchmark ?

Nah you don't need the beta, to unlock voltage hit settings>safety properties>check unlock core voltage.

Kombuster is similar to furmark in that it tests cards overclocks for stability.

I don't care what you think, be warned insulting other members on here will not be tolerated, I learned that lesson years a go, and yeah anyone who takes 4890 xfire over a 480 needs their head seeing to.

I agree unless of course they already have a single 4890 then I can understand it.

Sorry that I m very slow bencmarking and stuff, I m trying to update the PC.

also I had to go back to stock settings, so if yell want bechis now the overclock in my sig is invalid till I have the time to put it right again...

as for the GTX, I m going to see what it likes now, and get the fan sorted

don't ya just love it when you get new toys but can't "play" with them due to work in a few hours time -.-

I had a nice play on boarderlands as I was board...it never crashed once :p

things look the same on nvidia if not better, imo... but than again boarderlands does like Nvidia...so thats one extra on Nvida all the games work..without messing around

I m going through overclocking again..... I think its around 3.2Ghz

400*8.5......grrr I hate maths at 00:06 :(

physx is effectively useless though, all it does is slow things down? not to mention almost nothing uses physx anyways. all i was trying to get across is the fact that he already had one HD4890, so he could have effectively saved himself couple hundred quid just getting another instead of shelling out on GTX 480 for almost no real (at the moment) performance gain. sorry for seeming 'unoptimistic' about DX11, but we've all been down this road with DX10 and nothing came of that so within my rights to be sceptical. :D

heck, just re-read original post and he said he already had two 4890s, so effectively just bought a GTX 480 for load of cash which should see him very little overall improvement. weird that.

becasue I want a single card...even after a few hours of gaming its turned the PC around, any game just works...and it feels a lot smoother as well

its not the best investment in the world, but compared to some others its not the worst ethoir..

I completely agree. Having tried an xfire setup briefly myself I can safely say I'm much happier with my oc'd 480. The 'smoother' feeling isn't a myth even though I always thought it was ;)

Decent price for that 480, good buy I would say, enjoy. I flirted with CF5770(I just wanted to try it)and found none of the problems many people keep referring to, was I just lucky, maybe, but I have a feeling few people have problems but they post a lot giving the impression CF is borked. For me it was flawless and I was impressed with the scaling and performance of CF5770. However, maybe like the OP, I was keen to get back to a single card setup, so I did. Recently I have been seriously considering trying Nvidia again, last one was a 7800GTX, but it wouldn't be a 480, unless they came down to £299, so would probably go for one of the faster 460 like the Asus 460 CU TOP. Anyway to the OP enjoy your new card, not a daft purchase, entirely understandable.:)

re:

Raven was agasint Nvidia at one point I even remember when the GTX480 came out a lot of people bashed them about thier heat/power but since they came down a lot in price plus 85% of the drivers Nvidia came out with for the GTX4XX have been gems in terms of performaces sept for the one that liked killing cards.

Whats happened to this place:confused: a couple of months ago Nvidia was getting completely bashed by ATI Fans, even I was getting a hard time explaining my new gtx480 didnt get as hot as everyone was trying to make out, it was not as noisy as people were trying to make out..... to be honest this forum appeared only to be ATI only:confused:

Members here who would totally **** Nvidia now are 100% complementing them:confused:

I am not trying to start any wars but I am sure many of you know what I have talking about.

Cheers

I'm not certain, but I think the newer drivers increased performance quite a lot compared to the old betas around the release of the cards. Thats why you experienced the mass nvidia bashing on here. Now the drivers and prices are better its a different story. Don't worry though, I'm sure the nvidia bashing will resume when amd/ati's new lineup comes out
