Guild Wars 2

It's obviously had an impact on them - posted on facebook today

If you want to pre-purchase Guild Wars 2 to secure your 3-day headstart, Hero’s Band in-game item, and guaranteed access to all future Beta Weekend Events, you should pre-purchase directly from https://buy.guildwars2.com/ or from one of the many authorized retailers: https://buy.guildwars2.com/retailers. If you choose to buy your key from other, non-authorized sources, we cannot guarantee that the key is valid and that it will give you access to the game.

We would also like to re-iterate that we have not and will not sell so called “Beta keys”. When we give away Beta keys to specific weekend events it will be through promotional activities like tradeshow give aways, website contests, etc

Still struggle to understand how they can't easily remove something like a key/region they are after all database entries which should be trivial - could be a protection mechanism I guess.

It'd be bad business if they do, those authorised vendors won't be happy if they start doing in en-masse, there's a reason you can get it cheaper from non-authorised vendors.

The pre purchase and beta access are there for people who already know they will be playing GW2, mostly fans of the first game.

How many people play GW1 currently? I wouldn't be surprised if the larger percentage for GW2 are new generation MMO players.

Although it's quite hard to quantify some of these stats, generally when someone buys something there's no system in place to read the minds of the buyer and know if they are a "fan", other than linked accounts.

However many people linked their accounts. Guild Wars 1 is still very active and alive, I don't know why people don't realize that. Being a 7 year old game with a beggining, middle and end, most long term players have already completed the game several times over, and done however much 'optional grind' they felt like doing (30/50 up to 50/50 HoM, Gwamm), and after that they stopped playing.

There have always been new players going into the game though, and being as casual and solo friendly as the game is, players can progress and beat the game without having to find groups for any of the content.
