Guild Wars 2

Well my feelings after a day and a half I managed of the beta weekend:

Positives:

- Seemless play, with the way the questing works you can run into various areas and everytihng just keeps going without the need to stop.
- The game wants and rewards exploration which is nice in the modern day on the rails MMO.
- Graphics are great and really fit the game.
- I like the combat and the evade function, though at times it seems a little sporadic though that may just be my understanding, and I like the self healing thing though that can get a little irritating when you are dying and not able to do anything about it.
- Classes are all rather unique at least those I played. I played Ele, Eng mainly but even experimenting with Mesmer, Necro and Warr I didn't feel like any class was too similar which a lot of modern MMO's suffer from.

Negatives:

- Queue times for WvW? WTF!?! I could never play it because the queues took so long, 3 hours or so and I never got in at one point. Then you get in and it takes 10-15mins of running just to find a fight. It may take some getting used too but it was massively underwhelming for me :( That and the queue issue really put me off it.
- As I worried most events are a mindless zerg when there are the numbers there, no tactics beyond keeping yourself alive.
- Pvp in general. I played Heart of Mists and joined the random battles (which was a chore in itself actually getting in) but I just found it extremely confusing and fast paced. This may well end up as a good thing and easier when you understand your class but I was just dying every few seconds and the evade never seemed to work.
- World events are no where near as important or grand as they make out, admittedly I didn't get beyond 10 and things beyond that may become more unique but even at early levels I was expecting a lot and it was underwhelming.

All in all I really liked it. I thought the game was fun to play and enjoyable and that was what I am after. I think the game will benefit if you are playing with others (roll on the Immortals) as it will take away a little from the mindless zerg aspect and in pvp you wont be rolling solo everywhere.

The queueing aspect for pvp was worrying from both a length perspective in WvW (could never hardly play it) and from a wtf is going on perspective in the heart of mists queueing (I just spammed until eventually something appeared after 5mins)

I would like to see the dynamic events actually being dynamic (which might happen at higher levels) and the mindless zerg aspect was a little disheartening but all in all seems a great game and I am really looking forward to it. Though getting so thoroughly owned in pvp in beta has made me reconsider playing engineer and not sure what I will try now. :p

Structured pvp was broken for a lot of this beta weekend. The servers kept going down.

Usually it's straight to the mists, and straight into a match. No hassle. Don't let that put you off.

I've not gotten past level 10 in any weekend but those I know who have tell me the events get much better - have to remember the early zones are to settle you in to the game. You don't want to be turning people away before they've started.

Glad your enjoying it, a few things that may help you out. The zones begin to be a lot more dynamic later on, they kept the starting zones fairly simple just to get things going.

WvW queue times were a bit strange this weekend hopefully they can sort them out! The thing is WvW with no guilds really communicating or trying to play it strategically will end up just being a mess. I imagine once theres more at stake and its not just BWE you will see a lot more smaller skirmishes everywhere attempting to get camps and take out caravans and such.

On the battlegrounds thing it felt a mess because you don't know your class, you really need to put in some serious hours to start to feel in control of sPvP I'm looking forward to that myself.

This. I had a hard time with most classes but once I found the one for me and put the hours in I got a lot better. Played a Mesmer with a focus around my clones and survivability. Was great defending points, because I wouldn't necessarily kill the other player but I could easily survive against most people, and if it looked like taking a while to kill them, or it was a stalemate I just called on my guildies on Mumble to help. I still don't have the full hang of it.

The other thing which is worth mentioning is that builds + gear + signets etc etc make a huge difference. 30 points in one set of traits is a lot different to another and works better with certain weapons.

Also - don't be afraid to use your heal. It's on a CD so I like to pop it early, so it's ready again.

PVP is very fast paced, but once you get the hang of it, it becomes easier....ish :)

Not a fan of the zerg ball. Also means you will get one shot by the boss as his damage ramps up.

Much more fun with a single party, maybe a couple of stragglers. Even then boss battles are pretty mindless.

Dungeons in exploration mode should be fun.

Great looking game, Loved the asura area and characters (snotty little nerds).

Hard to get to grips with, starting to get a feel for melee combat.

If it's anything like GW, it will evolve and hopefully a tweak on some aspect of the gameplay I didn't really like could be improved upon.

I miss it already, and it's not even over yet. The WvWvW, was some of the most fun PvP I have had since UO. Absolutley loved it, my PC doesn't run it to it's best but it will do until I can afford to upgrade. Roll on August 28th!

Unfortunatly WvW went from bad to worse with this event, could not even get in tonight.

Pretty sure they will have it sorted come release, as all the other BW there was no real issue. Had a run this morning in it with about 10 guild mates was really fun to have semi coordinated battles, at one point must have being 70+ in the fight and had zero lag.

Did not do the arena at all this weekend, just messed about with different races/classes.

End of the day for me, no matter what else the toons are real fun to play, and that's a damn good starting point.

If you still looking for a casual guild to join, we can be found at www.gw-mmo.co.uk

Loved what I've been able to play even with PS2 taking up a lot of time this weekend.

Think I'll play an Asura engineer on launch. Never been one for 'cute' characters but some of the skills are funny with the little ones lol

I've seen a few gameplay videos of this and noticed it's more cartoony compared to GW1. Nevertheless, I'm still going to get it since a lot of people I know are also.

I need a new fun social MMORPG. I miss WoW but I also don't miss its negative bits and I'm hoping to move on with GW2. SWTOR, Rift and TERA have disappointed me after a month and the only thing I'm playing atm is Diablo 3.

I think I've decided against the Warrior and going with Guardian. Just seems more like my play style and I actually survived better. Now.. Roll on the 25th!

I dont suppose those complaining about queues have considered rolling on a different server? I was on boreal station and didn't face a queue all weekend.

That was the most lame beta event ever. I was even a survivor and won. I want that hour of my life back holy ****.

I believe they limited the amount of players in WvWvW due to finding a bug at the start of the beta, no idea if the queues wedre still limited to to this at the end of the weekend though.

WHERE ARE YOU? I CANT SEE YOU? I CAN'T JOIN WVW! TEAMS FULL :(

The game, NEEDS better system in place to let you find and join your friends/guilds in certain game systems. I hear this way too much in multiple guilds, public chat, voice comms etc.

Now, I may have completely missed it and I do understand how commander works in wvw however, it really helps to see where people are on the map and considering how small parties are and how you can't always expect a commander to be online, everyone I know has issues finding others when they can't join a team, especially when it's on the move.

The devs bent over (in a good way) to make this a friendly, intuitive, relaxed game, now you can even teleport all your crafting materials directly to your bank to matter where you are in two clicks for free , teleport points, mail from anywhere, all these things and more.

But when it comes to some aspects I'm confused as to why they didn't put more effort into it.
I didn't get to really try much this weekend, but from last weekends event it was a common occurance.

Not sure if they changed much?
Of course, there are times when it's really easy to find the big battle, the problem is it's not always.

I'm still hoping for the performance optimisations, almost a month left and while I get over 60 fps quite fine for normal play(ish), wvw it goes to less then I'm happy with and gpu isn't really using much still.
It's not just me though, it's people with lesser machines.

Performance was pretty nice and my 7970 was being used 95% sometimes when looking about meaning having my cpu so highly overclocked has a significant impact on game performance here. I would say a 5ghz overclock would enable any modern top of the range card to be used 100% at 2560x1600 but sadly I can't reach those clocks, I'm opting more for 4.5ghz recently with the hotter temps in the UK this week.

Was getting around 50-60% GPU usage on both of my 1gb GTX460's. Was getting FPS dips to about 35 FPS at times with 40% usage.

Don't think the engine is optimised for SLI.
