Guinea Pigs

I have 2 guineas, very awesome little guys.

Main things is a nice large cage as they need to run about a lot which leads to epic popcorning, and lots of vitamin C rich snacks i.e. broccoli and spinach are what my 2 love with the occasional little piece of apple and some carrot to nibble on. Just remember they always need hay and they will get through it like no tomorrow!

I'm looking at expanding as we're moving them into a larger area in the back garden, so will have plenty room and grass to graze! :D

They're amazing escape artists as well... mine are like ninjas!

Do you leave yours outside overnight when it's warm?

My wife would happily give you advice on these things. We have many of them, she is a well known member of the various forums and ours live like kings both inside and outside. She can give you advice on cages and where to get piggies and frankly if you offer a good home and commitment rescue piggies are a good way forward. Send me a trust message if you want to speak with her sometime.

Thank you, I will be in touch.

Odd that you mention rescue piggies as have found one locally.

I have been looking into breeders and finding a reputable one seems hard and I have to say, some of the stories regarding piggie farms has put me off.

The only reason why I wanted young ones originally was because I was not sure if those from rescues were somehow of a "bad" temperment. I have since looked up piggie rescues and it appears they do not want to match the wrong piggies with the wrong family as they do not want them coming back.

My girlfriend and her housemates got a pair from Pets At Home about a year ago and they're as happy as Larry and seem very healthy. The conditions in the store seemed good - pretty large enclosures with a few pigs in each. I think how they're treated depends entirely on the staff at each store.

They're in a medium-sized indoor enclosure but go outside most days into a large run.

They make a right old racket when they hear you coming because they think you have food but it's quite a soothing sound to my ears!

I've got 3 pigs in a custom cage made out of metal grid thing with clips that was supposed to be a shoe rack I believe. It measures about 3x10 with a ramp and a small upper level. They're ace :) we got some rigid plastic sheeting as a base as they're mostly kept indoors, had to invest in some vetbed as one of ours appeared to be allergic to sawdust!

Rescued them all, they generally are terrified for a few months but with lots of handling and hand feeding do get used to you. Had 6 now over the years (rip piggies)

We've just been given two as our first family pets. Both boys. Daughter has named them Magic and Sparkle, thank God I don't have to walk them in public!
