Guitar Tab Question

Hey guys, got a quick question because I can't think what I could search for on Google for it.

Anyway, in a tab for a song if it has 'x' on everything string what do you do? Am I right in thinking that if I play, for example, an F chord then I have to do the 'x' thing, can I just do a 'fake barre' and mute the strings that way, or, do I have to use palm muting?

it's a muted note/chord yea

for instance, smells like teen spirit has the use of this on the main riff to create that 'scratchy' effect when you've got your distortion on.

But do I have to use palm muting? Or the way I said or is it optional?

depends on the song I suppose. in the case of teen spirit, you'd just lightly use your fretting hand over the strings to create the desired effect.
