Hello,

I have a Mexican Strat and a Vox AD15VT, I bought the amp as I thought it would give me a good range of tones being a beginner, but I now find it hard to get a decent sound I like out of it and wonder if i'd be better with a non modelling amp and buy effects pedals. I play mostly 70/80s rock, AC/DC, Springsteen etc.. Any suggestions on what I should start trying out?

This last week I've been playing with the most awesomest guitar I've ever played in 36 years and its the Line 6 Variax 300. Putting that through my Line 6 Floorpod and I can create virtually every major guitar sound of the last 50 years.
The guitar doesn't play too bad either and I've got to get me one asap.

What's your budget and usage? The bigger Voxes are pretty good :) Not the silver ones, the blue ones- I've got the 60 watter and for me it's ideal. Just abit better than the Line 6 equivalent.

Just practice really but something that would do for small gigs soon. Their are still some sounds i'd love to have but cant get them. Unforunately I cant explain it as I dont know how too...... I would need to provide a sample of what I want to emulate.

Budget is negotiable really, maybe 400 max?

All I'll say then is don't get too carried away and buy something massive, there's no point. I did this, because I'm a halfwit, and bought a Marshall half-stack. There's never been an amp made that sounds as good at 1 as it does at 10 :) A medium-watt combo should do everything you need.

Unfortunately because so many people go for bigger = better, small amps tend not to be as well specced. But for the learner, I reckon the Line 6 with the 1x12 driver, the Vox AD60, and maybe the biggest of the Roland Cubes are all good choices. They do nothing brilliantly but they do make a good range of sounds. The Vox's amp modelling's better than most I reckon, and the sounds are just a little more "real" than Line 6's, though not quite as varied. Line 6's extreme distortion is better.
