*gulp* Crucial M4 256GB SSD keeps vanishing from BIOS

Booted my PC up a week or so ago and it just sat there for about 15 seconds on the "Republic of Gamers" logo, then when it got to "Starting Windows" it hung there for ages. Eventually I reset it because it didn't look like it was ever going to complete and was certainly taking considerably longer than normal.

When I rebooted and went into the BIOS my secondary SSD - a Crucial M4 256GB SSD - had vanished completely from the BIOS. Arrrrgggh!. Did a quick Google search which suggested disabling S.M.A.R.T checking, which I did, and sure enough it came back. Oddly re-enabling S.M.A.R.T again on the next reboot didn't make it disappear or anything, it just carried on working as it had been before it ever went wrong.

Nothing on the drive seemed to be inaccessible or corrupted when I checked it in Windows.

Anyway, after switching off my PC last night (a perfectly normal shutdown) and starting it up this morning the same happened again. Several reboots didn't fix it, it was still absent from the BIOS. This time I found some instructions on the web about leaving the computer on for 20 minutes or so, then powering it off completely for 30 seconds and restarting it. This made it come back again. Again there was no apparent data loss.

I'm starting to worry that this is symptomatic of an impending catastrophic failure simply because it's been installed for months without this issue coming up. The only thing I think that I've done recently was upgrade the drive firmware to whatever the latest one is (010G possibly?).

Latest motherboard BIOS (I think), certainly it's a recent one. Memory configuration hasn't changed since I built the PC and I've never experienced crashes or lockups or whatever that would relate to it.

The latest firmware is known to cause issues like this. Re-flash to last firmware.
Eep. I am indeed on the latest firmware - 010G. :(

Confirmed - checking the Crucial forums everyone is reporting this issue. The fix is apparently to downgrade to 000F. Good job Crucial, Samsung will be getting my money next time.

Samsung and Intel aside, Crucial are one of the best SSD manufacturers out there. The M4 has a great name for reliability, and they have been very quick with firmware fixes - hopefully they will sort out this "blip" quickly.

Without the recent Samsung price drops, I would have opted for an M4. Benchmarks are nice, but stability, compatibility and endurance are more important IMHO.

So keep the faith, but take regular backups. And be thankful you didn't buy an OCZ.
