OK, so as you can probably tell, I'm gonna ask her to marry me (in the near future anyways). Mum has offered me her nan's engagement ring, but it has a missing diamond and would probably need resizing. Has anyone had any experience with getting rings repaired and if so, what kinda cost am I looking at? Obviously the stone will differ in cost depending on what cut colour clarity or carrat it is, but a general idea woud be helpful :)

Cheers guys and wish me luck!

First of good luck :D Plan something decent!
So what you are asking is how much to re-size a ring and repair?
Shouldn't be too much at all IF you buy the diamond from the same place (I'd want it set and sized for free). Just make sure you go with someone that knows what they are doing and does quality work.

You are doing it all wrong mate, you need to buy a ring, the cost should be approximately 1.5 times your monthly gross salary, if your earn commission, this figure needs to be adjusted to 1.75 times your monthly gross salary.

Don't forget to give the mother in law a pig as well!

If your gonna ask her to marry you, you want to give her a good ring. If you can't afford to buy something nice, hold off and save up.

the rainforest company has some pretty awesome rings (just dont tell her you got it there)

After much deliberating and research into the metals, cut, clarity etc etc I got her one from said rainforest company for 1000 quid (rrp 3000), had it valued in a jewelerry shop and they said it was 3.5 - 4k worth...

As for proposals, do it on holiday. A nice one :D

Trust me, after 8 years we're past the ball and chain! It's not that i am being cheap, but the ring i've been given is highly valuable in sentiment, is gold and diamond with sapphire too as i remember. In short, it's not much of an heirloom but is the closest our family has to having one.

Get whatever you're happy with. I'm not a cheap **** but I don't see the point in spending thousands on an engagement ring. Possibly on the wedding ring, maybe, but for the engagement ring realistically it's down to whatever you're happy with and what you think she'd be happy with. I think that's a nice idea doing that personally so I say go for it. In my opinion the sentimental value of that alone would be worth more to her than a ring costing hundreds/thousands.

It's nice to use family heirlooms (that salary nonsense was invented by the industry to sell gaudy tat to wage slaves so ignore that).

My wife wears a diamond eternity ring of my nan's that I had repaired, missing stone or two (quite small ones were missing) replaced and resize and that was a couple of hundred to do. Her engagement ring I had made and that was a bit of a different deal.
