Gunna jump ship........

By the time I send my Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art to Sigma to convert to Sony FE mount Lens, I could sell it and buy the original FE mount version for less or same money ;)

^^ agreed.

I reckon if I sell all my Nikon kit its gunna cost me around 2k to go Sony (A7R III) with equivilent lenses, flash spare batteries etc.

What flash gun would you recomend, Metz 64 AF-1 Digital Flashgun - Sony looks like a great flash?

Thanks for your input guys, just need to convince the boss ;)

Not sure on the flash, people speak well of the Godox range.

Have you tried the Sony?

I think its worth renting a body and lens to see if its worth the expense and trouble of learning a new system.

In what situations do you find auto focus difficult with the Nikon kit?

Yeah thats obviously a good shout.

There a certain situations during a wedding when your focus point will be on one side of the frame, and you need to move it quickliy to the other, is a bit clunky, so not the auto focus its self but the means to get you there. With Sony's auto focus system this just looks like a no brainer.

Well, you can get the AF selection to wrap around. It is also worth reducing the number of AF points for things like a wedding, the high number of points are useful for tracking animals/athletes/cars, or when you can be precise with static shots. For weddings you might fidn the 21 point mode sufficient.

And just because the Sony has some theoretical ability to make AF better, i wouldn't rely on theory and would try it for yourself. Most pros that use Nikon bodies seriously who try the Sony A camera stick to Nikon for anything with critical AF. The keeper rate will most likely be higher with the D810.

Speaking from someone who has shot the A73 at weddings....I leave on all 693 points because when you press they eye-at button it overrides all your other settings and it will start to look for the eye inside the frame.

Soooooo take the aisle shot...you can use it to track the bride walking towards you every single step of the way. You can move around and it will lock, you can recompose all you like and it will lock and having all the focus points active meaning she is locked every step of the way.

Soo speaking as the current gen Sony owner and who has shot weddings with it, I would not recommend reducing number of focus points.

If you have face detect turned on, it will find faces without you pressing the shutter so the second you do, it locks on it. It’s like a pre focus, waiting for you.

If you want “less” points, just make the point bigger.

Ps I don’t think it’s a theory, I have the camera, it’s reality.
