I have chicken wire "sausages" in the gutter, over the downpipe opening. They clog up fairly quickly, even though I taper the ends to maximise the cloggable surface area, and can lead to overflowing gutters if not monitored, but as I'm in a bungalow for the time being, it's not too hard to check them regularly.the actual blockage starts in the angled connection to the downpipe.

Complete crap. They just splatter the mud and gunk out of the gutter all over the walls of your house.I see you can get gutter cleaning tools, basically a long pole with an angled jet to clear out the gutters. Are these any good?
My old man called them hedgehogs. They're only really good for leaves though. It's the sediment that's the worst as that comes down with the rain, or run off from the roof, and no gutter guards can prevent that.
