I bought a Maxtor HDD from OcUk last year or the year b4 ? Which is just my 2nd HDD as a backup. All i do is download stuff directly to it & that all it does.

Last week i tried to access all my music but it took ages & then WinXp told it can access it.

I checked it & found that it wouldn't even spin up. I even plugged in my working DVD power lead & that failed to spin it. Took it to my m8 house & tried it on his working molex power lead same thing so i guess it's dead :(

I know i should backup the backup but hey it's too late.

Anyone have any idea how i can just get juice into it & then transfer all my data to another drive ???

My friend suggested i find an old Maxtor HDD & swap out the PCB & that may fire up the dead HDD ??? Anyone got any experience with doing this ?

I've got over 100GB with all my Music & Game Backups. I thought about sending it to a company that will recover all my data. Will that be expensive ?
Any Links ???

I'm sure all it just needs is power & it'll work.

Any Ideas ???

Many Thx ;)

It can be done but you'll need an identical drive to donate the PCB

Yes, three figures certainly and possibly heading towards four.

Dont know if this is what is wrong with your drive - custompc issue 048 has a small feature on resurrecting a dead hard disk - I think it only works if your drive spins up initially but slows down without accesing data.

Put your hard drive in a plastic airtight bag (zip bag or similar) and then put it in the freezer for three or four hours, take it out and reconnect - its possible this may enable you to access the drive and download your data.

It cools the hard disks read/write arms and makes them contract away from the platters enabling it to work again.

Sounds as if its not your read/write arms though.
