Had an awful day at the gym today! In 4 years of heavy training I've never experienced anything quite like it...

Did shoulders/quads last night so I thought I'd just do some relatively 'easy' deadlifts/glutes. Did 5 sets of deads, my back felt like it'd had enough so i left. On the way to the car I got an almighty pain in right side of my back and leg.

Got into the car and sat in agony for 10 minutes before I lost the feeling in my face, arms, hands, legs. Had really bad pins and needles, couldn't move my fingers to pick up my water bottle for a drink.

Saw a trainer leaving the gym so I managed to stumble out the car and get his attention - I couldn't speak properly. Took me inside and they had to sit with me until I could speak and the feelings returned to my body. They wanted to phone an ambulance but I refused and glad I did!

Scared the hell out of me - Still not quite sure what happened. I've felt a bit sick ever since and bed bound for the night but I have no DOMS whatsoever, I deadlift every week.

Embarrassed more than anything, dented pride. Any ideas or similar experiences? Exhaustion(I've been in the gym every night for 17 days straight) ? Possibly panic at the pain in my back? Dehydration(had an upset stomach this morning)? No idea...

Never had it but a customer of mine who works in a gym in EK has told me all about it.

Sounds quite funny really given that you're ok.

Delayed onset muscle something?

I'm going to say possibly all of the above. Also how do you actually make any progress if you don't allow your body time to recover? There's reason most routines are 3x/week. It's because it enforces rest days. I'm going to go with dehydration at a guess though.

Did you just leave or did you do some stretches and sort yourself out first?
Probably just your body saying 'bitch your gonna pay for not letting me rest' the sitting in the car probably made it worse :p

I'm no doc though :p

Loss of feeling can't be good? I mean I've drained myself extremly a few times and twinged something in my back a little and been quite sore/sick/feel like passing out but never loss of feeling. I would go see you're GP

He's mentioned exactly the same thing?

Delayed onset muscle soreness :)

Each muscle group is split to allow plenty of recovery time. I've been making great gains lately using exactly this method. You're right though, I haven't purposely been ignoring rest days, I've just been pushing myself and gaining from it...until today. I sit at a desk mon-fri so no excess strain, my muscles recover well and the diet is more than adequate. :)

Lethargy, dehydration, muscle twinge / pull, hyperventolating, panic attack. Either way mention it to a GP as a precaution and piece of mind in case connected with something else.

Aye he had came in the next day after training hard and felt like death. Pretty sure I gave him a lift up the road after he came in and fell asleep. :o

Go and see your GP.

Whilst probably not, this could well have been a small aneurysm given the symptoms you describe. It could also be impinged nerve bundles or just a good, old-fashioned panic attack.

There is a reason for not overtraining and getting sufficient rest in between bouts of exercise. If you think your blood pressure can triple when doing big compounds, lifting big very day for over two weeks is bound to cause more than skeletal muscle damage.

Go and see your GP. They will probably tell you ease off, and only be really concerned if the symptoms persisted for any length of time.

Other than that, think more carefully about your training schedule.

Sounds like a stroke to me more than anything else! I've had panic attacks and never experienced loss of feeling, I've suffered exhaustion and dehydration and only ever had partial loss of sight and silent migraines. That just sounds like bad news I think. I'd get over to your GP asap and tell them about what happened. You can't be too careful with your health.

Can't really add anything other than 17 days with no break is asking for trouble and doing more harm than good.

I wouldn't have thought DOMS would give you the symptoms you describe - my understanding (which could always be wrong) is that it's the soreness/ache that you feel in your muscles after exercise and the delayed part means it's not evident immediately (e.g. a day or more after), if it was sooner then it would be acute muscle soreness. Neither of the above are necessarily evidence of issues for you in terms of exercise, they seem to indicate muscle damage but then that damage is necessary for growth. What you've described is more concerning and my suggestion would be that you visit your GP and at least get yourself checked out - it may well be nothing but if it's not then it is much better to catch it early.

I'd echo the above, always go to your GP for anything like this
your pride could be the least of your worries if you don't go.

This.

Those are not minor symptoms!

@ thomas.Please:
I've had panic attacks and never experienced loss of feeling
You can if you are hyperventolating and this is happening due to panic attack. You would get muscle cramps, problems moving and severe tingling/ pins and needles. Anyway, cannot stress getting this checked out by a GP enough. :)

First thought reading those symptoms was 'stroke'. However, given that this is right after a session etc... I'd be inclined to think you left too quick and didn't warm down, or you've simply been over doing it.

However... I am no Doctor.. and I would be going to the Doctor to get it checked out.

Can't remember the exact quote but read it the other day and was along the lines of if your car was making an odd noise you wouldn't hesitate in getting it checked at a garage yet a lot of people are so reluctant in going to doctor when they have an issue with their body.

For the sake of a few quid it may give you peace of mind and answers.

I dont understand why your going to the gym that much without a break? Asking for trouble surely even if your getting your required cal intake and sleep there is no way your muscle can develop properly with that much constant strain on them.
