my gym is still taking monthly payments from my account, even though they have closed all gyms.

They state they can offer a online aerobics service, therefore they can collect payments.

I am not into aerobic or any kind. I just used weights.

I've emailed them, but they are ignoring me. Should I freeze/ cancel the DD from my account?

Gyms are a cess pit of financial contract corruption, i will always pay a little more each month for a rolling contract rather than the standard suck you in for a year syndrome.

UK gym culture is shocking compared to the rest of the world but that is a different discussion :)

My leisure centre automatically put all payments on hold as soon as they had to close, gave everybody the option to continue paying a reduced rate for online classes and stuff or another option to continue full payment with 50% going to the Nation Emergencies Trust. They've been a bit rubbish with other stuff recently but can't fault their actions on this one.

Have just left my membership going as its a local gym and I dont want him/them to go out of business. They are still doing remote classes by via Zoom/house party which my wife is still doing.

Also lent me a bar and a few weights. If it was a big chain I would have cancelled it.

I willingly left mine in place. It’s a small establishment and I want them to still be there when things reopen! It isn’t a huge amount per month.

you can’t just cancel your DD. You need to give them the correct notice or you’re defaulting.

My daughter has weekly swimming lessons at the local leisure centre. They gave us the option to freeze monthly payments or keep paying and we will get credit once it reopens. Its only £30 a month plus it helps them to continue paying their staff.

I'm with a chain and my payments have been frozen by them.

I wouldn't be happy about them using an online class as a reason to still take full payment.

Same here.. Cheeky ******* if they are still taking payments.

This is hard.. The longest time I've been out of the gym (other than a knee op) since I was 20 but there are worse things going on.

Gyms generally survive on the 80%+ of members which dont ever go, so am not surprised to see them continue to take payment.

My gym is a local which can go under over this so I've get payments going.

The issue with cancelling for smaller gyms is not that they will lose a few months of payment from active members but they will lose the on going payments from the members that never turn up. A big chain may build members pretty quick but some small gyms build their customer base over years and having mass cancellations or notifying all their members to stop their standing orders/DD may mean that they will have to start building the members list up again if they even survive the hiatus.

Mine is exactly the same. Small local independent gym, the best one around here for miles. If too many people cancel they will go out of business so whilst my income isn't affected I have decided to carry on with it.

Anytime fitness have been good. They gave us 3 options:
1. Pay as normal (35pm) and when they re-open my membership will be 1/2 price until they have paid me back + 30 days free membership
2. Pay £10pm and get 30 days free membership
3. free freeze on fees.

I have chosen 1.

I’m with Nuffield and they stopped taking payments as soon as they shut (albeit only one so far)

Can’t say I’m hugely impressed with their usual membership practices though as all I’ve heard for months is how new members are paying less on a rolling contract than I was on a yearly, but that’s another discussion :p

I paid a year up front in cash to my spit and sawdust type gym on January :p The discount for doing so was a couple of months worth so should even out roughly. Not too bothered as it's a gym I've used on and off for 6 years so happy to support a local business. Unless they end up being closed for a few more months in which case I'd expect a couple of months tacked on payment free at the end
