Hey, well last year I started up the gym but mainly for cardio and I got pretty fit but I never used the weights much as the uni gym got flooded and so a lot of it was lost and the weights were hostiley contested by big men haha. Then I injured my knee quite badly and it still hurts now a bit so I have to go easy on the cardio so all thats left to do is to do weights really. Now the gym has all been redone and it's pretty swish and I want to bulk my self up.

So what would you guys have in mind? I own a 20kg set of dumbbells as well. Things you might want to know and could possibly help me with:

1) I can't squat, I get terrible stretching pains up my shins because I believe my ham strings are too short.

2) Since I stopped exercising my tum is no longer flat and i've lost all tone in it so that I have a wrinkle across it which turns red when I slouch, I'm hoping to get rid of that asap and is my main concern.

3) I also have back problems due to several injuries which have lead to rounded shoulders, painful necks and very weak shoulder muscles. This I would very much like to improve on. Using a machine and pressing just 15kg hurts a lot.

4) I have to go easy on leg exercises but do need some to stop my self looking out of proportion.

Thankyou for your help, I really want to get back into the gym again.

I shall be hitting the gym in a few hours for some gentle cardio to see how my knee feels about it.

:EDIT:

Also I can go swimming, rock climbing etc etc. The gym is apparently the biggest uni gym in the country now and does many many things.

swimming could be pretty handy for improving your shoulders and overall flexibility in a low impact way. Have you spoken to a physio at all about suitable exercises?

Yeah I'm thinking swimming might be a good start for me. I've got to check back with them soon to talk about why there is still a pain there though they didn't seem to think physio was needed at the time and it has improved a lot since. Now I can use my knee fine its just that if I don't move it for a while it starts to hurt. Running on it doesn't actually seem to hurt it. However I don't want to push it incase there are more serious problems to come.

i would be looking to get a good stretching routine in place to help with the hamstrings. are there personal trainers available at the gym if so i would try and utilise one of them to get a routine set up for you

also get your diet sorted. what happened to your knee?

Is that aimed at me? as you quoted someone else. I'm at leeds uni and I truely love the place.

@telewebby I'm thinking I may need to start googling how to fix my hamstrings too. There should be personal trainers, we also have this key system which logs everything we do on every machine and can have set routines programed into them for us to follow and they automaticaly increase them selves or we can ajust them. It's really quite a high tech gym as it was all rebuilt only 6 months ago. Costs 240 quid for what is effectively a 6 month membership though, kinda stung a bit for a student.

My diet isn't the best as I'm limited in my culenary skills and time between lectures etc but It's not hidious. I'm going to increase the amount of chicken I eat in particular as its a good lean source of protein.

I had a drunken accident that resulted in me twisting my knee very badly and they don't know if I have pernament damage or not but suspect not. I also fell out of a tree house as a kid and had internal bruising down my spine which screwwed up my posture etc which has resulted in the pains I have now. I should have had that sorted when I was younger but my parents never pursued it and I was none the wiser.

That was an interesting gym session. My left arm was extremely weak and held me back while doing upperbody exercises so I shall have to build that up with pressups and bicep curls I think. I also now seem to get a stich in my left side the moment I hit the treadmill, this made it very hard to really get anywhere. It's amazing how quickly you get unfit when you stop going to the gym and keep going out drinking haha.

Personally I wouldn't go near a normal in house personal trainer for this and seek out a recommended person instead. Sounds like you have a lot of things to consider for your training and will need quite a bit of guidance
