Relied on air cooling all my life so I'm just wondering how long the the h100i will reliably cool my rig and what kind of chance there is of it leaking or developing other serious issues.

AIOs and custom kits don't develop leaks by themselves. The pumps on all in one units like Corsair h100i are a fair bit weaker and less reliable than custom cooling pumps and while it is unlikely for the pump to eventually fail, it is not unheard of. I would stick to high end air cooling over 'all in one' loops for reliability. The inbetween option would be the OCuk Techlabs Fathoms AIO, which will show improved cooling and better components over the h100i but also with a price tag premium over it.

What is the reason for getting a h100i?

The h100i has a 5-year warranty, and corsair rep on the forums verified that if it leaks and breaks anything they pay for it. After all the investigations of course.

I trust mine 100%, I expect it to last 2-4 years depending if any new CPU fits the same socket.

You can leak test AiO's too, which I did.

If it's of any interest I have a 6 year old NorthQ Siberian Tiger AIO unit (now called the Corsair H50) that still works flawlessly after daily use on a variety of CPU's including a Q9650 and a 2550K, the Asetek units are on the whole quite reliable.

H100i is swiftech though, not asetek. Square pump with a built-in LED. H100 is Asetek :)

Still, proper Swiftys and not those ***** ones.

General reliability of the AIO coolers is very good, while some may and have failed in the past the quality is a lot better now days and the company is generally prepared to cover the expense should anything go wrong.

Corsair are one manufacturer I trust big time, doesn't matter if it's a rebrand or not. If corsair put their name on it then their customer support is behind you.

They do have a 5 year warranty.. so that itself is long enough to run the cooler till the wheels fall off. We've seen coolers (H50/H70) lasted more than its life expectancy, but in case you run into any issues within the 5 year period, we'll make sure that we take care of you. Like what Make said, if it leaks and damaged other components due to water damage, we'll compensate you for those hardware.
