Hey guys, new user here. Been a lurker but finally decided to join. :)

Anyway, I've been looking at getting a closed loop water cooling system for my i5. I've recently built my first decent machine, so would like it cooled pretty well. I've done a bit of looking, and it seems like the H70 is a damn decent cooler.

However, I've been hearing about a newer design used in the Kuhler 920 by Antec, which is apparently even better than the H70. Anyone have experience of know how of these two and can say which one is best?

Oh, one thing that attracts me to the H70 is Corsair's warranty. I've heard that they are behind their product to the point that in the rare cases when a cooler leaks, Corsair have personally replaced every component damaged in a leak. I'm not sure if Antec would be that generous?

Thanks. :)

^ just out of interest, would you suggest a big heavy air cooler or a liquid-filled water cooler for a machine that has to be moved a lot? thanks :)

Hi there,

Have you considered a high performance air-cooler like the thermalright silver arrow? if you look at this review you will see that it performs better than the H70 at cooling while also being much quieter and cheaper.

Hey,

I considered an air cooler. But honestly, the size of those thins worry me a bit. I don't like the idea of having all that weight placing stress on the motherboard. I've heard a few stories of warped motherboards due to the sheer weight placed on them by a monster like that.

(I would be replacing the stock fans with GT's if that helps any)

What do you mean by a lot?

If it's just to drag out to clean a room or the 'occasional' lan then heavy air should be fine - as long as you're careful.

However, if you're lugging your rig form one place to another on a regular basis then i would, personally, reduce the risk and get an all in one water solution - or a smaller, but still, effective air cooler.

moving it every few months from uni to home (~250 miles)

I move my PC a lot as I go to LANs and I went for an H7O in mine. The only thing is - when I got it it was silent but being moved about has made the pump buzz. It's not massively audible but it is there.

If you don't move it too often I think i'd go with an air cooler and exercise a bit of care during transport. :)

so why did you choose water cooling for your lan pc if you dont mind me asking?

or are you saying air cooling in hindsight? :)

i would have thought that an all in one water solution would be more "dangerous" when moved around and outweigh the lightness factor

Nah, they are fully sealed - so no worries on that front (unless you decide to stab it for some reason).

Personally I would suggest going for the H50 for the OP's uses (cooling an i5), currently it is only £40 with the "h50promo" code and it uses quieter fans than the H70 so is a quieter cooling solution which still performs well.

Well, depending on how the cooler performs, I want to try and push the chip as hard as possible, which is why I factored the Kuhler 920 into the equation, as I've read reports that it pretty much destroys the H50 and H70, and wanted to see if anyone here could personally confirm that.

Anyone got anything on the 920?

(Also, I don't think I've ever had a thread hijacked this fast before :D)

Aye, the 920 (and H70) perform better than the H50 (and are louder due to the faster-spinning fans)- but the i5 2500K isn't really a particularly hot chip - even when overclocked. If you keep the CPU within the recommended safe voltages then the H50 really won't be limiting your overclocking.

I chose water because it basically gives me top-end air performance in a case that won't fit a top-end air cooler. :)

I would seriously consider just using an air cooler now as with miniITX especially, overclocking is limited which stunts the advantages of having a good cooler.

Plus when i've been moving my SG05, when I turn it back on it sloshes and buzzes quite madly for a good half hour before settling back down. I really don't think the H5O or it's brethren (including the Kuhler) don't like being moved around.
