Im half tempted to ditch my H80i in favor of an air cooler..
Im running a 4690k @ 4.5Ghz and have 2 sticks of full size corsair vengeance ram

what ones are out there?
what are the pros and cons?

Depends on your RAM with air coolers.

Then you can either go dual tower (NH-D14, ND-D15, Dark Rock Pro 3, PH-TC14PE), price around a H80, or single tower (NH-U14S, Dark Rock 3, Matterhorn...). Thermalright make great value heatsinks, but they aren't on OcUK anymore :(

Not sure why you want to change your cooler though.

Ive been on the fence for a while to be honest.. but after seeing the boys h60 leak over his gtx 970 its making me think...

I didint buy the H80i new!! I got it sealed but ive not got proof of purchase so if it was to go I wouldn't have any come back

so this has giving me the thoughts of going to a good air cooler..
Ive got an air cooler on my AMD machine and to be honest.. it does a good job

Been very happy with my Noctua coolers. Had the NH-D14 on my 4690k, was able to keep the chip at low to mid 60's running @ 4.6. It's bigger brother, the NH-D15 is cooling my 4930k @ 4.4Ghz with temps hovering about 60.

Both times had the fan on low speed (about 550 RPM) so it doesn't make much noise. One thing to note with the NH-D15 is the front fan is a 140mm opposed to the 120mm on the NH-D14, this of course goes right over the RAM slots. You can adjust the fan's position to be clear of the RAM slots, but if you have high profile RAM and a narrow case you may not be able to fit the side on.

That's an interesting idea. Works but could mess up air flow in the case, but better than not being able to use the cooler. Looking at the dimensions of your case it might just fit.

I have mine temporarily in a Fractal Define R2 with this RAM. Slightly lower profile than your Vengence set but your case is listed as 235 mm wide where as mine is 207.40 mm wide. The front fan extends about 7mm outside the case so I would guess it would fit yours.

I just watched a video review on youtube where the NH-D15 more or less wiped the floor with the H105 so yea this has got me really tempted.

Im in the process of building a machine for one of my mates and hes been at me to find him an AIO so this might work out just nice as I could get some cash back on the H80i to use towards the NH-D15

Im starting to like the look of the Phanteks PH-TC14PE and it looks to perform on par with the NH-D15.. plus... it would match my case

I have vengeance ram which had tall heatsinks. I took them off using a hairdryer to heat the adhesive. There in no reason other than cosmetic for those heatsinks. I run at 2133MHz which is full spec. Shown next to Patriot in pic below,

I have had the Phanteks and rate it as a very good quiet heatsink.

Otherwise, use this Silverstone cooler SST-HE01 (leaves ram uncovered).

Pros 140 x 38mm fan, quiet on low setting, does not need high setting on my FX9590 at stock. Big, but no bigger than many others. Offset allows access to Ram. Will allow mobo to further control fan speed. Cheapish.

Cons It aint too pretty. A little tricky to follow the instructions.

I've a £19.99 Themis cooler on my 4690k @4.6ghz and it maxes out about 67/68 when serious stress testing. Regular use is way less obviously. I did put on 2x 120mm EK Vardar's on just because I could.

you got a picture? thats better temps than I get with my H80i!!!
I take it the Phanteks PH-TC14PE should be more than capable?

thats a beast of a cooler Andy

do you think I could use the Phanteks PH-TC14PE and stay on 4.5Ghz on the 4690k?

James,

The Phanteks PH-TC14PE held the FX8350 at 4.5GHz in all except prime so I would think so.

cheers

cheers for that Andy.

I must admit the FX8350 is a hotter chip than the 4690k as the H80i will be going back onto the 8350 once I get a cooler for the 4690k

I could only run prime for about 10 minutes with the 8350 with the H80i and that was at 4.4

We normally cover damaged hardware if one of our coolers leaks and caused the damage. But that will require a proof of purchase of the cooler for that process to unfold.

You have to keep in mind though, leak claims with our AIO coolers are the least reported within that category. It happens, but very rare.

hmmm says it all... would you take the chance?

I might consider an H100i but as said above.. im still on the fence regarding a top line air cooler..
