right i work at tesco one eve a week as a student.
not only do they always short staff us rediculusly on trolleys, now 3 yes 3 out of the flood lights in the carpark work!! bare in mind it is an extra store so its biiiiiiiig. its almost pitch black out there and im still expected to work. they have even been broken for 3 weeks now!!

Surely this is illegal as there must be some rule against working light conditions. Just think if a customer gets hit by a car and claims off tesco they'l be liable for thousands! I no for a fact that if i get injured due to it being too dark there will be trouble.

To top it all off there are loads of rude boy chavs who like to sit on the carpark wheelspinning etc. Also there is a sex offender on the loose in the local area who strieks outside the union, but this carparks surely a likely spot for an attack.

any thoughts on this?

Grow some balls and tell them you refuse to work in an unsafe environment and you are not going out there until it is safe to do so.

If you joined USDAW, I'd speak to your rep before doing that - they might just sack you an get someone else.

What has USDAW got to do with it? You don't need to union to tell you that you should refuse to work in an unsafe place! If they sack you for that, sue them.

I'm a member of USDAW as it happens, they are crap anyway! haha

he might just be on a temp. contract or whatever, they may be well within their rights just to get rid of him and get someone else.

How does that work?

Tesco is growing larger by the day, if you know about economics you will know about the characteristics of a monopoly/oligopoly.

One of the key characteristics is that they are price makers, which means they can charge what they want. An example can be local fruit and veg stores around new Tesco stores, they (Tesco) go 1/2 of the price of the small shops and once that shop closes they went about 3 times the price. If we keep buying from them and giving them power they will abuse it. They are already very powerful, if not more than the government.

In a society where ethical issues are playing more of a role in peoples choices to buy products or not, hopefully the bad press for Tesco and its abuse of power will deter consumers away :)

I hope the government does some sort of requirement on superstores like they have done in the USA. Most of the profits big businesses make is taken out of the country, which means no tax and the small businesses suffer.
