Hackers have stolen information from at least 45.7 million payment cards used by customers of US retailer TJX, which owns TJ Maxx, and UK outlet TK Maxx.
. . .
The company also told the BBC that 100 files were moved from its UK computer system in 2003, and two files were later stolen. However, a spokesperson admitted that the firm may never know what was in those files. "We don't know what was in those files - the technology the hacker used prevents TJX from knowing, and also the fact that TJX system routinely deletes files," the spokesperson added. BBC Link
There is a good article on this here

You have got to love WiFi :p

The TJX computer system breaches can be traced back to July 2005 but weren't discovered until November 2006, according to a TJX filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. I'm no math whiz, but that's 17 months of unauthorized access. cnet News Link

The scale of the hack means it passes the Cardsystems breach in 2005, which exposed more than 40 million credit cards. Computer Weekly
Visa and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce last September identified the five leading causes of card-related data breaches:
(1) the storage of sensitive information on a card's magnetic stripe in violation of the PCI data security standard,
(2) missing or outdated software security patches,
(3) the use of vendor-supplied or default system settings and passwords,
(4) the exploitation by attackers of poorly written Web-based applications such as online shopping cards, and
(5) the presence of vulnerable applications pre-loaded onto systems shipped by vendors. Information Week
Before you chuckle, know that TJX -- the parent company of T.J. Maxx, Marshall’s and other stores in North America and the United Kingdom -- is hardly alone. A soon-to-be-released survey shows that fully 61 percent of company techs don't think the sensitive information in the control of their firms is safe from hackers. Red Tape Link
And I'm sure that those "company techs" are right on top of the case - with the whole-hearted support of their IT Savvy Directors :p

i actually work for tkmaxx in their head office seems alright from this end - they still need to upgrade the ram on my desktop because of all the new security measures put in place - seriously, why is this news so ridiculously old?

Perhaps because it wasn't "posted like 1/2 months ago when it happened" so far as I can see and I think that it is a useful reminder to those who use Credit Cards or WiFi?

Sorry to hear about your RAM ;)

Well the Jihad express comes by landmail so the delay is inevitable. Plus the Zionists were intent on stopping the world from hearing about their evil plan. But here it is:

Evil Plan of the Joos.

1. Steal palestine (back from the muslims).
2. Blow up the twin towers (but make it look like the muslims did it).
3. Hack TKMax. (not sure why but maybe to stop a line of designer ninja gear).

Damn forgot the obligatory snipley sarcastic ending, here goes:

;)
