Hi,

If a house has a home Network and the internet is piped round the house to various PC's using HomePlugs can this be hacked into if the house has a live outside power socket?

It is not uncommon to find external power points for garden equipment such as lawn mowers, strimmers, pressure washers etc and if the outside socket is live there is a chance it can carry internet access etc.

there is a chance yes. i dont think there are many houses that use powerline adaptors and have an outside plug socket tho (at a guess). you could prevent access by setting up an access list on the router to your mac addresses only.

Powerline data traffic is encryptable, some of the older generations were a bit complicated for non-techies, but on modern ones it's a bit like a bluetooth sync, just press a button on all your homeplugs within 2 minutes and they'll synchronise with a random encryption key. After that it doesn't matter if someone gets to an outside plug, they won't be synced with the plugs inside the house.

What are the chances of someone coming upto your outside socket with a laptop and powerline adapter? :p

Its not uncommon ?

Id say it is. None of the houses in our street have outside power sockets, nor in my parents street. I'd go so far as to say that the number of households without an outside power socket far exceeds those with

and to be honest, if there's a stranger in your back garden with a laptop plugged into your house, the fact they have access to your internet is the least of your problems ....
