basically i ordered my bits from OCUK. went to start the pc and it would freeze on the XFX mobo screen. or sometimes get to the bios and stop. anyway they RMA the board and i get it back today, and it feels like the original problem has gone but now it sticks on the black post screen where it says your processor and press del for setup etc.

the post message on the board is 50 (XFX 790i ultra), and it is relating to "initialize usb controller" the pc wont let me enter the bios at this point and i have to reset an try again and have no got past this point yet. i dont have a usb mouse before you ask. ;)

i have been waiting to get the pc going since last friday when i got all the bits. anyone have any ideas?

*EDIT*

realized i had my usb mouse in. :O oops. but now its doing exactly the same thing that i sent it back for. will occasionally get to the BIOS and then stop so i have to reboot again. i'm kinda wishing i'd never bought the stuff now. :( please if anyone has had the same prob or knows of any suggestions then let me know. this is very annoying. :/

can you list your full specs matey so people with the same stuff may know whats what

sorry, it was all in my signature, but it was too big so got removed.

~XFX nForce 790i Ultra SLI (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard
~Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 LGA775 'Yorkfield' 2.66GHz 12MB-cache (1333FSB) Processor
~OCZ 2GB DDR3 PC3-10666C6 1333MHz ReaperX (2x1GB) Dual Channel DDR3
~Antec Nine Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case
~Asus Silent Knight II CPU Cooler

those are my new bits, and i have my old Western Digital SATA HDD, 2x Optical Drives and BFG 8800GTX OC 768MB and Antec TruePower Trio 650w PSU in there too.

do you think that its possible the PSU is at fault? a few times when i've switched it off on the back i've heard an electrical phzzt noise.

it still only posts to code 65 (special treatment to ps2 mouse port) on the motherboard readout and wont budge past the XFX screen. got into the BIOS again with the new RMA'd board, moved down the menu two lines and it froze up again. and a few other times i got 1C on the post led which relates to test CMOS and check battery fail in the user manual.

i have tried booting with no drives (optical and HDD) to see if i can get to the BIOS, i've tested with one stick and two of the RAM in different configurations. everything is connected correctly and i cannot see why it's not booting up as it is purely the mobo, cpu, GFX and ram on the board when i remove the other drives. the CMOS battery is out of the board now and i feel i've exhausted the options i can think of. HELLLP!!! :(

is the CPU fan spinning? long shot but i had this issue a while back (never got past post), also did the board need a bios update for the new intel chips?

yea everything fires up fine (fans etc.), but as for updating the BIOS i'm not sure? i would've thought as it's a brand new board it would at least get to the BIOS screen without freezing.

and it recognises the processor in the black post screen before entering the BIOS (on the one time i got that far), i think even if i tried to update the BIOS i still wouldn't get past the XFX screen.

Hmm that is weird im not sure and seems you have tried everything, maybe try different psu or different card if possible. Dont really know sorry :(

i know its weird. i was just hoping someone new something i'd ovelooked. i've built several PC's before and i cannot see why it's not booting. i'm gonna try a new PSU, as its the only thing left that isn't new. :( and the HDD shouldnt make a difference because i've tried it without it plugged in too.

could it be a memory problem? i'm just stabbing in the dark here. really need help as its really annoying me now. Plus RMA'ing things to the UK isn't cheap especially for MOBO's.

Hi mate

by my experience,a frezzing bios is always a bad signe:)

i had two situations like that, and turns out i had to change the boards

after entering the bios ,it frezees and i had to use the power button to power off
( in one of the cases the board is dead after that)

but ,as they are new boards( less than 15 days) , I went to the shop and they exchange it for a brand news ones , boxed:)

i hope your wrong. :( thats another £10.90 to send it back to OCUK. and i thought that if something cost £200 it would at least work.

i've had the parts for over a week now and it's just a waste of space to be honest.

I feel your pain I am today awaiting for overclockers to check my return and send me my third Asus Maximus Formula. The first had a bent pin in the cpu socket. The second made a strange sound near the cpu and ram that sounded like a hard drive being accessed.

I think you need to RMA it again if the new PSU does not sort it.

yea its getting RMA'd for the 2nd time. :( getting a refund this time, so i'm gonna order a supposedly better one. just need some ideas on DDR3 motherboards though. :/ been told the EVGA might be better than the XFX.

haven't yet sent it back, i'm gonna try some cheap DDR3 as some people have had problems with the OCZ ReaperX not communicating the correct voltage to the mobo and being given 1.4 instead of the reccomended 1.85v. would this be a possible cause for the system not starting/freezing?

if not then i'm gonna need to RMA it, and to think i ordered all this stuff over 2 weeks ago and it's still not running. :( feeling a little bit disappointed.

just an update for anyone who was interested.

basically i received my lower rated RAM today and the system boots up perfectly, changed the voltage to 1.85 and popped in my OCZ RAM and its fine. so anyone with a 790i and OCZ ram having issues booting up. try this if you have access to cheap DDR3, it cost me 40quid to get the cheap RAM but it was worth it in the end.

thanks to everyone and whoever it was on the other forum section suggesting this. ;)

nice one shadow. this problem has been around since i built the rig in my sig and that was end up of 2006 you would think it would have been sorted by now. but mobos still defaultng the ram voltage to low done it on mine.

least sorted it congrats enjoy ya new pc.
