Guys, guys, just yesterday I overtook a Bentley.

My car absolutely pwnsd it hard.

Fact.

I tell you what Mr Sausage, why don't you put your money where you mouth is and attend the next VMax event? There you will find plenty of 911 Turbo's, M3's, Astons and all sorts of exotica and though I have little doubt your car is nippy having seen how well a 220bhp MX5 goes, the reality of your performance will become clear. Short geared blats are one thing real tap opening power and your MX5 will be left in the dust I promise you.

I walked to work this morning and overtook a Bugatti Veyron and he was absolutely going for it.

Glad I invested in those Gola trainers - best shoe upgrade ever!

I once dreamed of owning a Ferrari F430 but now what I'd rather do is tune up a banger and spend my life convincing myself it's faster than everything else.

A 996 911 turbo does the quater mile in 11.9 seconds from my google skills, can anyone confirm this?

Looking around the internet at several mx-5 1/4 mile runs several mx-5's are of interest but this one inparticular.

11.99 1/4 mile, 1.8 turbo on stock internals, Toyo RA-1 summer tyres, no power listed but if its on stock internals it can't be much more than 260 - 270bhp anyways.

Interesting.....

Would be nice to know a few things for sure, like the HP of that MX-5 and the deffo 1/4 mile time for a 996 Turbo.

257BHP at the wheels and 12.512 1/4, this is a 1999 as well so a Mk2 which put on weight vs the mk1.

id say 11.9 1/4 mile from a 911 Turbo is a best case scenario sort of time. Ive seen people try to get under 12 and not manage it.

Advantage with the MX5 is its low weight. Its like smartcars, you want to see how fast off the line those things can move once people start putting serious engines in them.

Lightness and short gearing married to good power should see a quick 1/4 mile time if traction can be obtained. Get it over 1/4 mile, where serious power comes into play and something like a 996 Turbo would swallow up a 275bhp MX5 make no bones about it. Road races of the nature our OP outlines are to be taken with a pinch of salt as they are far from scientific and have way to many variables to be relevant, not least on twisty country roads. I love MX5's but lets be clear even with 250bhp they will run out of puff around 100mph and THIS is where a Turbo is just starting to open its throat. REALLY powerful cars show themselves over 100mph and at that point the difference is VERY clear. Get a turbo in the band on 'cam' and even with 275bhp the Pork will show its true colours. Lightness is great for agility, braking and acceleration, but big power is what you need to get big speeds. Gear a 911 to be good under 100mph and it's quarter times will be sub 10's.

However, as I have said many times to be massively different in performance you need a massive power to weight advantage and this Mazda and a Turbo will be pretty close so the difference on the road should be pretty small. Get it onto some long straight however and the Mazda will be a dot in the Pork's mirrors like the 200bhp+ Westy was at VMax. Epic off the line but get to 70mph and it was going backwards and quickly and that was against a wheezy RS4 not a Tub.

Oh no doubt about that, a 1.8 5 is only geared upto 127ish, original post (so i believe) or someones point but deffo my point was a 250bhp 5 will be very close upto 100mph vs a 996 Turbo and looking at the data seems to point towards this being the case.

Your post implied (condescendingly) that you regularly keep up with 996s, M3s and the like. A fact several people pointed out. If you are now trying to backtrack then good luck, but you will end up in a Yantorsen sized hole where you will be telling us there was a black hole anomaly and your car was magically given a huge boost of power. Possibly.

Who are you?

And yes, regularly, as in, every couple of weeks when I go out on an early morning Sunday hoon with the piston heads lot. Explain to me where I am back tracking...

A lot of the regulars here have met me, im not some Azzab or Yantorsen who flies in with lies and then leaves when called out.

The guy running 11.9s quartermiles is registered on miataturbo.net as Apexonyou. He has the same ECU, injectors and basic kit as I run, but he is running a disco potato IIRC.

I'd expect a 911 turbo to have the initial advantage over his car due to the AWD but over the quartermile his car might peak past the Porsche.

But like housey says, on a long straight bit of runway the turbo'd 5's will be left for dust....... but I don't drive on long straight bits of runway. I drive on roads, and within legal(ish) limits, what use is a car that can hit 190mph?

It's not like the average Aston Martin driver is particularly fond of B roads though is it? He was probably too busy sipping his warm brew that his housewife made for him...
