I have always been curious of this dish. I have held back from buying it because I don't want to ruin my first experience by buying a bad one. Has anyone got experience of a decent haggis available from the shops for home cooking? Also the best method to cook it?

I eat Haggis about twice a month, so now a days probably don't give it the love I should...

Personally, I buy Halls Haggis from Asda, remove packaging, and outerskin. Mush up a bit. Stick in microwave for 6 minutes. Take out, mush up a bit more. Put in microwave for another 5 minutes. Mush up one last time, leave to rest, eat.

IMO both the canned and plastic wrapped supermarket versions fall quite a bit short of fresh butchers made. I doubt you will find fresh hand made Haggis though, but ask around. I think proper haggis should be steam cooked.

After cooking, a good dollop of butter and some ketchup are a good choice.

My local butchers are selling haggis. Unsure if they're handmade there or elsewhere but they're a pretty good butchers that make their own biltong and sausages. You must have one close in London too.

Burns Night on Friday! :)

So supermarkets should have them easily available. When I've cooked it in the past I just boiled it I think, in the membrane.

Simon Howie's is good for a supermarket-sold haggis, if you can find it. Hall's is also quite good, I prefer Hall's to McSweens for some reason.

I microwave it to cook it, then pop in the oven for 15-20 minutes to crisp up because I like the mix of crunchy/soft you'd get if cooked properly in the oven but i can't normally be bothered waiting that long.

Mix up all your leftovers the next morning, make into patties and shallow fry it - same principle as bubble and squeak. Lovely.

Oooh! Thanks for the heads up.

Burns Night 25th Jan! As usual, I buy one for myself, my gf won't touch the stuff.

Always enjoy Haggis, neeps and tatties with a wee dram, once a year.

I usually roast mine for half the recommended time in the casing, with a small amount of water, and covered with foil. Then uncover, drain the water, remove the innards from the case and roast for the remainder of the time.

If all else fails, there's always this option:

I always just boil haggis as I prefer it to being done in the oven. The only risk is the casing splitting, though lots of haggis these days comes in a boil in bag as well as the casing to avoid this problem. This website seems to have a good range, I've not used them myself though as I get mine from the butcher next door.

After cooking, a good dollop of butter and some ketchup are a good choice.
 :( Now that is just horrid :p Still, each to their own. Eat it however you like it.

More than likely as it's at the weekend I'll allow myself a treat and get myself a haggis supper from the chippie :D

Whatever you do, do not, I repeat DO NOT buy a vegetarian haggis. They are absolutely vile!

This sir, I disagree with, veggie haggis is what got me into the freshly caught manly stuff.

We just get a Sainsbury's (or ALDI) one and steam it with the steamer funnily enough :p

Ill be doing a favourite from the menu at work.

haggis bon bons with arran mustard and whisky dip.

will try and post up the recipe tommorw when i prep them for friday

I slice mine and pan fry it then stack it with black pudding cooked in the same way with roasted veg and a white wine horseradish cream.

Ah I didn't know about Burn's night being this Friday. I have a haggis I got in a hamper for Christmas from my sister who was up in Scotland. Think I'll have to bash it out.

What to go with it?! I'd imagine it needs something that will stop the whole meal being dry?!
*haggis novice*

Fork in one hand, glass of single malt in the other ;)

Sadly, I'll be in Cairo on Burn's night so, not much chance of haggis for me :( Never mind, I'll just have to get some when I get home.
