Haggling over the price of a car

As it's 'or nearest offer', I'd personally start by knocking £1k off it, and go from there. I'd say around £2.5k - £2.6k if you waved the cash at them.

I was going to offer 2700 and hope to get it for 2850 tbh. Knocking a third off the price would just make him think I was a time waster surely?

you have to call it as you see it.
a really low offer doesn't phase some sellers, others will think you're a cheeky merchant banker and refuse to go below a point which is above what they'd previously decided they would take.
an "i'll teach him a lesson" type scenario if you will.

When I saw my Clio for sale it was below what I thought was a good price for it in the first place.

I mailed the guy with an offer £200 quid lower than that and he said that's the lowest he'd go but we had a deal, well chuffed :)

sometimes that's the way to do it if you feel the car is fairly priced.
i've known sellers to disappear after the price has been agreed only to return from their house with a handful of "stuff"....spares etc.
you can guarantee if you'd started with an insulting offer you wouldn't be getting the extra goodies.

Yep, that's me alright.

I'd better start practicing my techniques!
hey i'm not patronising mate, no-one gets it right everytime.
it gets a little easier the more you buy and sell though as you get better at reading people.
to be honest if the asking price is fair then i don't insult them with a silly offer.on occaision i haven't even made an offer at all and just paid asking price if it was priced up fairly or i really wanted the vehicle.

IMO haggling via email is not the best way to do it. It needs to be done face to face so the seller doesn't have too long to think about it and you can read their reactions.

Sorry, I didn't mean that you were patronising, I just meant that I've learned something from this thread :)

I totally agree however the Elise was a fair distance away so I wanted to sort out price beforehand rather than get there and end up with the same conclusion.

Considering it's been on the market for a while and hasn't sold, what makes him think that putting the price up will help it sell?

Perhaps he has some sort of dyslexia regarding numbers? :D either that or he's incredible optimistic.

I got £75 knocked off my car when i got it.

Yup he was too stubborn and lost out. He may have done it because its his pride and joy he's selling but still....

I've put my car up for sale above what I'll take to allow for room for manouvre in the negotiations, its a sensible idea I think.

Best of luck on th car hunt fella.

cause now if some 1 looks at it he will say ill take 17k and nothing lower people be like ooo 295 off not bad haggle thank you and he still gets his asking price in 1st place lol

No one in their right mind would refuse a £16,900 offer on an asking price of £17,000.
This could well be a case of the missus wants to get rid but he does not :p
