Haha! Bang-for-buck bargain!

My old rover had that!!! would be a good way to freak people out walking past I imagine, esepecially since if you stop holding the button down it beeps at you

My dads old corrado used to put the windows up automatically when you locked the door. I can imagine that was taken out due to being a safety risk. :p

The E34 can look quite menacing in black, I like it. My colleague has a 520i in black and it's done well over 200k. Eats the water pump now and again but otherwise fine for it's age and milage. Complete lack of cup holders is amusing however.

Me likey, thats a bargain. Hopefully it wont be too much of a black hole for money!

You said it didnt have the correct manual dash - why's that?

Ahh! The e34 - the best built 5 series!

My old man had two, a 530i 6 pot and 530i V8, whilst he's very very happy with his e39 528i (especially given its done circa 1/4 million miles!) he still says the e34 was better built.

Undoubtedly he prefers the drive of the e39 I think, he's kept this one for longer than he owned both e34's!

That looks more like a knackered rev counter rather than excessively high revving imo, you say something about it not having the correct dash? I'm guessing its possibly got one from a 6 pot??? - I read somewhere back when I had my 728i that putting in the instrument cluster from a 740 V8 or 750 V12 would give inaccurate tachometer readings.

I may be wrong, but I'd check it with a known working tachometer if you can. :)

Still, what a bargain! :cool::cool:

Yeah, I agree with R420LA6X2/4MNA.
Compared to the engine note of my 540i it sure doesn't sound like it's revving to 8k RPM.

I'm not into cars. I'm a motorbike person, but I am most impressed at the value for money on offer here. £500 for a decent car that works and I presume is reliable, is damn impressive.

As a comparison, I bought my motorbike for £1200 and if it rains, I get wet, I can't take any luggage/baggage and can fit only 1 passenger.

As a run around, thats a great car you have bought. If you sell it on, I'm pretty sure you can get more than £500 for it.

Thanks Rilot/R420LA6X2/4MNA - The dash, I've been told, is for the correct 8 cylinder model - but it's an automatic so it's constantly displaying warning messages for both trans program and oil level. It was swapped out after the backlighting failed on the old one.

I've got the "correct" (hopefully) manual 8 cylinder dash in the boot :) - so I will swap it over and find out.

The one thing is if the factory rev limiter for the 8 is say, 6500RPM, then the limiter on a 6-cylinder dash would be in the region of 8600 on the gauge - which it goes above and beyond with no sign of stopping......don't forget it's in neutral and I'm not holding it there so it's only flicking back and forth through the rev range.

We will find out though! I'd prefer for it not to be chipped, if I'm honest, as a starting baseline - maybe if I still find it is chipped then I will hunt down a standard fuel/ignition ECU (whichever one has been modified) to revert it to stock.

The total closure thing, you don't have to do from the fob either - simply hold the key in the lock to the left for about 10 seconds and it'll do it as well.

The only thing I don't like about E34s (being real picky) is that if you lift the driver's door handle, the interior lights come on (presumably to help you find your way in). To me, however (and given that there's a torch in the key), it just seems like an ideal way of showing a thief your interior :D

I guess not many people know that though........

Oh, wait.... :p

Not much planned for today, unfortunately - girlfriend isn't well so staying at hers for the day! Came back this morning though and even though it's water stained and still a bit grimy, it looked much, much better and quite foreboding sitting on the drive. I think a lighter interior (like the grey leather in mine) would suit it better and make it less dark inside - but will think about it. Need to get those tints out still :)

Is there a better way to spend £500? Honestly I dont think so after seeing this. Where is my copy of Auto Trader? Looks like it should clean up very nicely and have abit more poke the my sister in laws old 518 touring. It was so slow but you could almost forgive it for being rock solid and driving like a new car after so many years.

On a side note I never realised aux water pumps were a willy waving feature, my old Renault 19 had one and I thought it was so 1990 :D

My '96 e36 328i does exactly the same thing - it sets off the alarm when you do it also! :D

Fixed.

Why do people get so excited about cup holders?

I don't get excited about cup holders. but when my colleage takes us on a drive to get fat and ill at McDonalds, there's nowhere to put the bloody drinks and there's about 4 roundabouts on the way back so I have to cling onto them and they're cold.
Lesson of the day, don't go to McDonalds, but realistically at least two could have been put into that flatish space near the gear stick.

They are really useful. The cupholders in my car are crap and it's annoying, though it bothers the GF more than it does me. Having good cupholders is great, the entire time I was hiring cars in Aus with good cupholders we had them filled with drinks, its great.

No cupholders makes it really quite a faff.
