half decent telescope

Having bought a Skywalker AZ Goto 127 a year ago and thinking I could get some nice photos im struggling with it all too.

First issue for me was a defective AZ board. This took a few evening to work out it was bad and got swapped out. I have a T ring for it and my Sony SLR works fine on it (with remote timed shutter controller). I also strongly recommend Stellarium and a laptop which makes locating things in the sky much easier.

But I want to see my first planet and with a limited view of the sky from my garden they all seem to be below the horizon when I am out there in the late evenings.

Is there a time of year/night when they come into shot?

It is incredible how clear the moon is with the filter on, even my wife was shocked how the details stood out.

If you download SkyPortal on your phone you can zap it forward in time to find out when things come into view.

Jupiter comes up later in the year for me usually, Saturn may be starting to pop it's head soon enough

Without an expensive mount your only option is short exposures, otherwise you'll get blurring.

30s exposures are okay for me without too.mich blurring, just need a higher ISO which I can't do on the lo gg exposure setting

Planets on the other hand if you could track them yes...although I've stacked images of planets before from video recordings and got decent results
