Half Life 2 Episode...4?

I think we may get TF3 and Left 4 Dead 3 before we see HL3. I also have this sneaky suspicion that they have focused on Portal 3 over HL3, mainly because of the VR demo that was already demonstrated a while back, and because of co-op. Portal is Valve's new baby in terms of innovation, so I can only see them develop it further.

I read that they pulled staff off other projects to work on LFD3 so that is the next game I am expecting from Valve.

Wont they bring out HL3 to show off their new engine then bring out new games on that engine after? It worked the last couple of times.

There are just too many quote from Valve, including Newell, saying that HL represents "the past"; they are are not going to "take a step back", that they've "learned and moved on" from the games they "used to make".

Everything points to them /not/ working on, or even being interested in working on, another Half Life title.

They've also said that they are afraid of "fan backlash" if they do release HL3, and at doesn't conclude the story the way people had hoped.

So it seems very much like: Valve are not interested in more Half Life; they have moved on, see HL as being in their past; they are afraid of not being able to meet fans expectations.

Personally, I don't think another HL is going to happen. I don't think it's a super-secret game in production. I think they genuinely don't want to do it. It's not interesting for them; and in a way it's become too much of a problem for them to cope with.

Why we even waste time discussing it I have no idea. Just let it die.

Gabe whilst not 100% ruling out another Half Life game has made his feelings clear on the subject. Half is an character/story driven FPS game and those sorts of games aren't really fashionable as most people these days play Planetside 2, Call of Duty and Battlefield 4 i.e multiplayer death match. Ultimately I guess he feels the return on investment just isn't worth it for Valve to make another Half Life game.

It's a good job Bethesda didnt have the same mindset and binned the fallout series. Thats story driven and an fps, yet it broke records for people playing it on steam.

Well with Shenmue 3 on the way, there is hope. The fan base of Shenmue must be much smaller than that of the HL series, too

Fallout 3 and 4 are RPG's played from a first person perspective where shooting is just one part of the game but it's not a strict fps game like Quake, Unreal and Half Life etc. The problem I see is Half Life 2 was a good 20-25 hours of soild gameplay the coat of producng a game that long with a production of the same deepth and quality would cost Vavle 250m USD to make (a total guess but comparable to a GTA development I reckon). If the game flopped it would be a disaster so it's no wonder you see game publishers pushing multiplayer fps like COD and BF (3 hour sp and a multiplayer option which gets played to death).

Why youball saying ep 4? They only did it up to ep 2?

Check the link in the first page. Episode 4 was apparently going to be outsourced, so presumably either valve or another third party were going to be making episode 3 but never did or it got cancelled mid dev.

Everyone says that, yet if they were to announce it on Monday morning everyone would be excited for it regardless of what they say online. :p

I still think that the original Half-Life was the best of all the various incarnations they've produced. It's got worse with every subsequent version.
