I played HL2 on release with a 6800Ultra and it was fine.

Yea, but how many other people had a top of the range card at the time?

iirc it was sound bugs that plagued HL2 on release. Not to mention Steam problems.

I think what the OP is saying is that games play far better after a year or so into their life, cause most of the bugs are ironed out, and performance is much better with newer hardware. Admittedly he's used bad examples!

HL2 scaled very well. It played nicely on my Radeon 9000!

Just randomly here, I believe the beta is unoptimised, which may or may not effect the retail version but I'm guessing it will.

I know a guy that plays crysis beta with a 6800ultra with all settings on medium and it runs fine and still looks great
