I'm yet to buy Half Life 2, but I'm thining about it now. However, what's all this counterstrike stuff and source stuff you get with the Game of the Year edition?

My spec (no overclocks):
AMD3500
1GB Geil Ram
ASUS a8V Mobo
Audigy 2zs with spidf to 5.1 speakers
6800 AGP 256Ram GFX card

Will Half Life 2 run with MAX settings on my system? Also will the various texture enhancement packs run fine and those packs are for ones that make the game look so much more real. Is it worth investing in some extra PC3200 Ram as well so I will be at 2GB??

Yeah, you will definitely be able to run Half Life 2 on max settings with that spec. Getting another gig obviously wouldn't do any harm but 1gig is fine for HL2 and CS:S.

CS:S is an online game which is definitely worth getting. I didn't bother playing the other stuff on the GOTY edition though. For the money, it's excellent value.

ditto

Consider getting the downloaded version from Steam, silver package i think its still called.

Comes with dod aswell which is a nice WW2 mod, and access to the valve back catalogue HL HL:Dm etc etc etc lots there.

Not sure on the prices tho, its probably a bit more expensivve.

I've decied I'm getting the Game of the year edition tomorrow from somewhere (not onlien as I like to have a hardcopy) along with HItman Blood Money. Jus thope they run okay, and I may try the cinematic addons to improve textures in HL2, but probs best on systems with 2GB of Ram, but worth a try.

Thanks for advice!

I will also try out this muulti player stuff and others things. Should be immense and finally push my rig as until now it's only really had Doom, The SIms and Flight Simulator!

For HL2 I'd still recommend getting the Silver version through Steam, you can still backup to DVD if you want a "hard copy". You get so much more value out of the Silver online edition than on the retail HL2 versions, which are the same as the Bronze online version.

All the package details are in my sig link for the Steam FAQ etc, but basically the only things you wont get which are based on the Source Engine from that package is Day of Defeat: Source, and then Half-Life 2: Episode One / SiN Episode One, which are both separate games, and can be bought only via online bundles.

No such thing as 'Silver' now, that's been discontinued for a good while.

Best package is the Source Premier pack, as it gives you every source based game (bar SiN Episodes), for a pretty reasonable price overall, and if you really wanted, the Valve Complete pack, with the good old Half-Life 1 engine games to go with it, which are worth far more than the extra $20 you pay.

I'll add, once you do have a Half-Life 2 DVD, you'll probably not use it again once you install the game, as you'll have a good couple of hundred MB of data to download for updates and all that before you can play, and everything is based on your unique Steam account, though unless you lose your Steam account details, you'll never actually lose any games.
