I'm new here so i apologise if this has already been up before or that its already around and i couldn't find it. Anyway....

I just had a PC built and ordered a 250GB hard drive but in 'My Computer' it says that it is only 127GB big. Does anyone know why this is happening or how i could fix it.

Thanks for your time.

Thats the setup i've got going with the 'Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB ST3250620AS SATA-II 16MB Cache' hard drive. Hope that helps someone.

I've installed the motherboard drivers, i know this is a stab in the dark but when i right click on it there is the option of format. I was going to do it but then realised i didn't know what it would do and that it might delete everything, so i left it. Could this help?

I'll try looking around for some windows fixer thing if its only reading to 127GB. The hard drive doesn't seem broken so thats good.

It really must just Windows XP not detecting more than 127GB of hard disks. Get a disc with SP2 slipstreamed in or make more partitions later in Windows. It's a very well known issue so there's a lot of information about it.

Your disk is definitely fine :)

Where would i get a disc with this on it?

So with that website do i have to reinstall windows? Can't I just put that free program thing on a disk, load it up and it will be fixed?

If i do have to reinstall windows will i lose everything on the hard drive that's on it now? I know I'll have to make a backup but will all the installed programs on here now need reinstalled as well or will they just run normally as soon as i copy the back over? (Sorry i'm so useless, i've never had to deal with computers this in depth before.)

I'll probably do the partition thing, thanks for the help guys. For a first experience of getting help from forums my expectations were crushed and overshot! So so so so so so so soooooooo much better than the retards on helplines, i hate them all.

Final question, well, more of check that i've got it right.

Once i've done the partition thing that part of the memory will appear as a separate hard drive so to speak, like i've got an E Drive now but once i've made a partition i'll have an E and an F. (Oh yeah, should i make the partition exactly 104.89GB or go a bit under? I don't want to break the hard drive by doing something daft.)

Right, I'm downloading the trial for that partition program now and i shall post whether i got it working or not. Again thanks for all your help, i'd probably still be shouting at it and hitting the table without it.

Right, I've separated the 104 GB into a partition and it has come up as the C drive. That is good as i expected that, very nice. When i go to open it though it says it needs formatting so i went to format it. It gave me the option 'quick format' so i guessed that but then it said that formatting will erase all information on the disk.

Does this mean just the C Drive but or the C and E drive (since it is only one hard drive.) I think it only means the C drive as it is seeing it as a separate drive but i don't want to go ahead without confirmation.

Well the original hard drive is the E drive and when i created the partition i had the option of picking loads of letters and the first one was C so i picked that one, i also didn't have the option of the letter F.

So since the formatting will only format the partition C bit does that mean it won't delete all my stuff on the E drive?

Thanks man, this has all been so helpful. I have got this problem sorted in less than a DAY when stupid people on helplines couldn't figure it out over a month.
Thank you all for the help.
