Halfords socket set

I've had my 150 piece Pro set since around 2003, so before the 200 piece one was even available. It's seen a load of use and abuse on a wide variety of cars over the years and is still going strong. The only annoyance is the stupid bit of foam you have to put on top of the socket section before closing and picking it up otherwise all the sockets fall out.
And that the stupid bit of foam gets blown away in the slightest of breeze when you're working outdoors. The number of times I've chased the wretched thing. Every time I seem to forget to weigh it down!

Lost the foam for mine ages ago, and yes all the sockets do now fall out :)

Been a brilliant set though, had it for over 10 years and still going strong.

LOL, yes, been there!

It's a great set, combined with the screwdriver set and I've not had to use anything else across multiple cars/bikes for years, barring the obvious stuff like torque wrench, breaker bar etc. Very high quality kit.
The only thing it could do with adding are some ratchet spanners.

Thanks for the advice. I managed to create an online account and linked my trade card. They had a promo where you get a free screwdriver set. In the end it set me back £185.64 for the 200 piece set including the screwdriver set. Not a bad price
I'm trying to get that deal and it's coming in at £247.50 with trade card. Did you have a discount code as well?

do they actually itemise individually what's included in each set ? I had to buy an 18mm socket for suspension recently and that doesn't seem to be to be included in the 150piece,
also I wouldn't really want bits duplicated between the 3/8 & 1/2 drive

Yes on the Halfords site they detail the contents

ok seems the 200 above has a better description than the 150 I'd looked at, but neither specify drive sizes , their pictures don't help much either.

I think mine is the 200 piece set. Definitely recommend, and Halfords still honor the lifetime warranty - my set dates from around 2010 & I had the 1/4' ratchet swapped out recently.

Only thing I'd say is that maybe 50% of the sockets I have never touched, so might be worth pricing up a smaller set + any unique parts that you might need? I've supplemented it since with lots of stuff - offset spanners, crows feet etc.

I have put a breaker bar and double-wrenched my forever facom 1/2" ratchet - not broken it yet
Did use gloves and glasses - probably inadequate, you wonder how they could shear off, like the tyre iron that came with the car.

I didn't buy a big set in the moulded case, but instead bought the following when on sale:

1/2 inch Halfords advanced tray set, which consists of 6 sided sockets and a ratchet: £35

1/4 inch Halfords advanced ratchet and socket set (in a little case): £8

Halfords advanced 12 inch breaker bar: £15. I wanted a shortish one to wield when under the car, and have a 2 foot reinforced water pipe which I slide over if there is room. TBH it doesn't get much use since getting my DeWalt 1/2 inch impact wrench, but still comes in handy sometimes.

So about £60 in total. They all get used, and I didn't double up in much when buying the above was added to my existing tools. Could be worth considering tray sets if you already have some tools and don't want to duplicate.

I appreciate that it's normal practice to use 3/8" tools for general use and then go 1/2" for heavier work or 1/4" for lighter work, but I was given a 1/2" drive set as a child to work on my pushbikes. This socket set died decades ago but I've just stuck with 1/2" as my go to size since!

Iv got the 200 piece set, have had it many years now. My only concern with it was I thought it was a good idea to get the black set. What does look good, until the day you loose a socket in an engine bay……

I have the older big set before they started adding the wheel nut sockets but wish I had got the black set when I had the opportunity

Halfords have an offer where if you add the Advanced 40 Piece 1/4" Socket Set and Advanced Screwdriver & Bit Set (Worth £25) to the basket you get both for £30

You need to signup for Free Halfords Motoring Club to receive a £5 voucher.

Seems like a decent deal.
