trying through the sp on it at the mo and now that ive got so far. the checkpoints want to take me to old clues that ive already done. am i being a numpty and need to change a setting or something?

I wish I could be of more help but I was asleep for most of the ODST campaign, all I did was follow the checkpoints.

Me and my mates had this problem. What i think the issue is was that we turned on the skulls, that caused the game to reset. This might be the problem with you?

You can have the option to turn on 'skulls', these skulls modify the game such as increasing the enmys health. Anyway i assume thats not the issue since you don't know what it is.

Do you go to "Save and Quit" when you stop playing or do you just turn the console off?

Sounds to me like you didn't save the game. It's a massive flaw that a lot of people have talked about. The game doesn't have Autosave or "Checkpoint save" like every other game (well bar COD4 and MW2, it doesn't autosave either).

It says ive unlocked all bar 2 of the levels. the only thing i can think of was that i went to one of the old clues in error and had to replay that lvl. so there is nothing on a map i can do to select checkpoints on areas i havent been with the final to clues?

If you picked a level that you unlocked, played it and then saved and quit, then it will have overwritten your save game and you'll need to start again I believe.

err...when you carry on a SP campaign it does take you to where you last saved (using the save and quit option). not sure how you went to one of the old clues by mistake but as has been said, replaying that level and then saving will overwrite your previous game.

Certainly not worth chucking on the shelf out of spite though lol

Won't happen. The same thing happened to me. I didn't save and quit, so i thought of just replaying the latest unlocked level and continuing, but after i did it and went back to the city, all of the old clues still needed to be done.
