A bit of background for anyone who isn't familiar with the game:

Halo Online was a free-to-play multiplayer-only modified version of Halo 3, developed by Saber Interactive and published by Innova Software. The game was only released in Russia, but was cancelled shortly after due to issues with Microsoft.

ElDewrito is a community-made mod for Halo Online. It allows the game to be played in player-hosted servers and aims to restore removed features, fix bugs and glitches, and add mod support. The latest version (0.6) is due for release in a couple of days and it offers a massive array of bug fixes + new features like the Halo 3 ranking system. Release trailer below:


With the imminent release of the new version, I thought it would be a good idea to see if I could churn up interest from lurking Halo fans on the forums. The Reddit Halo Online community has nearly 45k members, which is great to see! More information here: https://www.reddit.com/r/HaloOnline/

Definitely hyped for this, probably had 1000's of games across Halo 2 and 3 back in the day (it's a shame they have removed the Bnet stats now) Will be great fun to reminisce and try to BR with a M+K

Would be very interested. I also lost a lot of hours to Halo 3. I only sold my XB360 because the player base had all but evaporated.
 
What about distribution rights, etc. ? I assume they don't have permission to use the IP so likely there will be attempts to take this down?

EDIT: Or is the cancelled game freely available still? in which case a mod normally wouldn't have those kind of IP issues.

The mod has been around since 2016 and Microsoft must know about it but don't seem to be bothered. Obliviously that could change if it gets popular.

One of the developers replied to a comment about this on Reddit:

What is there to DMCA? We don't host the assets, we only provide an open source mod to bring out the engine's true potential.

It has been around since 2015/2016 so surely Microsoft/343i will be aware of it?!

played the current version, couldn't even use 1920x1080. The input felt terribly laggy/delayed.

hoping the next release on Friday fixes this! I'm up for trying this!

Also are peeps playing with m&k or pad? I'm quite excited at the thought of playing with m&k but not sure on the setup.

  • Added a Player.RenderWeapon setting that controls the weapon that your Spartan holds on the main menu. This is cosmetic only and does not show to other players.
