Here's what happened I wonder if you can help

1: I changed the CPU fan (on mobo header) from a thermaltake (noisy) to a quiet akasa
2: Booted up fine, went into bios
3: Had lunch, baguette and omelette, mmmm
4: Came back and PC was switched OFF for some reason
5: I press power button, everything comes on but no signal is sent to monitor
6: Repeated 5 many times with explitives...!
7: Took CMOS battery out n' in again and still no diff

The two fans on the mobo fan headers come on.
The HD is heard to be spinning
The GPU fan is spinning
The case speaker is no longer beeping and the HD activity light is no longer lit.
Took RAM out and no beeping...

Whhaaat is going on here I am at a loss:

P5NE-SLI 775
E6300
2GB Geil PC6400
ATI 4350 1GB PCI-E
Edimax wireless card
POS 'COLORSIT' '480W' PSU (I know I know but this rig plays freecell)

Reflux suggested putting my GTX280 in there to see if its the GPU that spontaneously died, but I fear that the POS PSU might not be able to power it and am scared of frying stuff.

This mobo is a sensitive piece of crap that sometimes plays hide and seek then will start working again, but this has me stumped.

Maybe I static-fried the GPU? I felt no 'zap' though. However was wearing a jumper that makes a lot of static lol. BUT case was plugged in via kettle cord and should be earthed? This is what I normally do with no problems

Cheers:)

Try the GFX if the lower x16 slot.

PSU couls well have died. I wouldnt risk resting your GTX280 on that power supply ;)

Oh yeh I should have said I have tried the GPU in the lower PCI-E slot to no avail.

You think the PSU is the problem? despite everything powering on seemingly ok?

ermmm why not try the other card in your the rig in your sig? am i missing something here as to why you can't swap stuff over with the rig in your sig? (other than effort of course)

rigs are 76 miles apart atm, will be home in two wks.
Mainly scared a crappy powersupply could harm my GTX...

sorry misread you, I suppose that is an idea, just to see if I get any picture on my system which I know works...

I have the same mobo, it's the worst I've ever had.
Turn the PC on and hit the reset button a few times, I usually go for 5 or 6. Can't remember where I got that tip from, but it works!

I had a mobo that was stupidly sensitive to the seating of the RAM - could literally brush the top of the RAM with my hands whilst doing something else and it would not POST. Wiggle the RAM and it was OK! So maybe try removing the RAM, giving the slot a good blow out for good measure, and reseating it. Maybe try a few wiggles if it still doesn't POST. Maybe try the same for GPU.

Also, some mobo's have a code of beeps or LEDs that indicate the reason for failling to POST, be it CPU, graphics, RAM or whatever. If yours has this and you can find the manual, may help you to narrow down the problem.

yeh it's a pretty awful mobo isn't it. I'll tell my mum re: ram see if it helps it to POST, I guess I would have brushed against it when installing the fan...

will try reset button too

PSU is specs in first post Chrisavz, not my sig stuff...
even so I doubt its drawing much more than 200watts even a carrp PSU should be able to handle that, I hope..seems to be:)

you can do the simple PSU check with the paperclip lark. that then rules that in or out.
i saw a clip on you tube, works well. dont have the link tho.

The paperclip test won't help since we already know the PSU turns on....

"Here's something worth mentioning that may also help when you can't boot. It works great for tweaking. Its from dlxmax ( Who is our electronics Expert )

Some people are complaining about the CMOS reset. I haven't reset the CMOS since I learned two better techniques.

1) Hit the reset button a couple times in quick sucession. Often than will cause it to boot up.

2) Keep the battery out. If you want to save your bios settings, use "ASUS O.C. Profile" tool to write it directly to the NVRAM of the bios. Then start to tweak. If you can't post, just hit the power switch on the power supply. Keep it off for 5-10 seconds and the CMOS will corrupt, causing you to post with default settings when you power up. Then you can reload your basic bios settings profile from the NVRAM. Put the battery back in when you find a stable clock and load your settings from the OC profile."

Are you certain that the CPU hasn't overheated. If you fitted the cooler incorrectly it would have overheated and died and would explain why it worked for a bity and now doesn't.

Thanks weird dave

Hodders (called my old hamster hodder lol) I would think it unlikely the CPU overheated as the heatsink is a lapped scythe ninja, and the E6300 is lapped too. The chip has been at over 3ghz for couple of years with no problems. Even without a fan the ninja could run the chip passively, indeed it allowed my Q6700 to reach 3.7ghz at a load temp of 72 degrees, my new megahalems reducing that figure by ten degrees...

still could have mounted it weirdly, ive done that once on a hp desktop at work before. it "looked" fine, and was all screwed in evenly and nicely, but wouldnt turn on. Reseated it and it worked fine.

you misunderstand, the heatsink was already on and was working fine, all I did was literally change the CPU fan on the header and the mobo will no longer POST!

oh yea, i did know that, i was getting confused by the other post, and other threads, and life. RAWR its hometime in 20 minutes!

Ahhh, you just changed the fan - sorry I misread your OP. Will it post with the original fan on ?

How well have you connected your power connectors?

I mean, say keep your HDD's on one set of cables, fans on another etc etc...

Is it a problem that the new fan takes more power, and has pulled through too much amps blowing part of your psu?
