ok, not used this before, looks pretty straight forward. basically my thinking is, set this up on my server and share my media files and my data folder. then i can access this from my laptop at work or when im out and about, and on my dads pc.
now some of you might know i have tried WHS 2011 and like it, but am disapointed that you cant have different libraries for different users. so i was looking into this and found XBMC and Hamachi would allow me to get around this (i hope).
so my question(s) :
can i have more than 1 Hamachi network on my server? so that my dad (and any other user) can log into a different network and only see specific shared folders (therefore allowing individual libraries) failing that they can just map their folders, and then set XBMC to only use those.
also, my router (or BT not sure which) has a habit of changing WAN IP address, will Hamachi recognise this and change it accordingly or will i have to do what i do now and use TightVNC to login to the server and change it manually?

If you're using WHS why not use the built-in VPN server? You can then authenticate access based on your user accounts which will probably solve your issue.

i was unaware there was such a feature, my knowledge in servers is limited, im trying to learn new stuff :)

will have a look through :) will VPN work with most media players (XBMC, VLC...)

EDIT : working through the tutorial, it says to forward port 443, but thats the port used for remote web connect. does this matter?

Hamachi is nice because it means you don't have to open ports and expose your network to the Internet.

Yes.

A change of WAN address won't matter.

thanks i will give this a go. and i can install this on as many machines as i want? can only one be a server?

You can install on as many machines as you want, but limited to 5 on a network on the free version.

There's 3 options for how the network is configured. Mesh, each device can see each other. Hub and spoke, where you might want to use your server as the hub and client devices as spokes. Finally gateway, which will allow the device configured as a gateway to open up your entire network to devices connected to the gateway.

You probably want to be looking at Mesh or Hub and spoke. Make sure your access controls are correct as if you're not aware, what Hamachi will do is basically extend your home network across the internet to other devices.

Also the other day you were talking about needing access for phones...you'll need to check that a client is available for each of them too for this solution to work for you.

Hamachi exposes your network too :p.

If you're really paranoid just run OpenVPN with a big key file.

is TVersity an option also?
sorry, im probs not asking the right questions.
im sure a lot of you will know from my previous posts/threads, basically i want to build a media server where each user can have their own library, and stream it over the internet. WHS2011 is really good and easy for this, but it wont allow libraries, which is a shame.
now ideally i would like it to stream to pc, laptop, tv (not sure on model, but can connect netbook to it if need be), wii, iphone, and windows/android phones if possible.

right i have setup hamachi, in hub and spoke, and its working fine. apart from it shows everything on my server thats shared. is there any way that i can set it to only show certain folders?

im not tooo fussed about that as a) there is nothing of great intrest on my server and b) who is gunna go looking for it

Probably the nerds in China and Belaruis who spend all day jackin' severs and all the attached devices that are left wide open :)

Your Dad might be a tad peeved :)

how is it wide open  its surely no more open than WHS 2011 is using remote web connection, only with Hamachi i can see whats logged on and it needs to be approved before it can get access. plus if i connect my max 5 devices to it, then they wouldnt be able to add themselves to the network anyway.

I'd expect it to show all shares, but only let you access them if you have the right credentials set up.
