Hand Held Speed Camera

I got caught speeding by an officer with a laser gun and was pulled over on the spot and issued with points and a fine.

aye but thats the UK lol, i got cought doing 150mph+ on the motorway between dublin and cork last year, slapped wrist and on my way ;) in the UK i got caught doing 32 in a 30 near worksop, got a 380 pound fine and 3 points. go figure...
needless to say our family is moving to south ireland in skibereen either this autumn or next summer kids school permitting :)

Returned to the scene of the crime. No longer there. Instead, cars hurtling down the road whilst I tiddled along nervously at 40mph.

Everytime I gain confidence in my driving, something like this happens. :(

Well it wouldn’t have happened if as a newly qualified young driver you had kept within the maximum speed limit permitted for a driver with an R-Plate.

What the chuff is an R plate?

In Northern Ireland for one year after the passing of a driving test, the driver is defined as a "restricted driver" who must not exceed 45 mph and must display an "R-plate" consisting of an amber sans-serif R on a white background. "R-plate" drivers are often viewed as a nuisance on motorways, due to their limited speed, resulting in many restricted drivers not displaying their "R-plates" or not keeping to the restricted speed limit.

This should be illegal, 72 kph ( 45 mph) is downright dangerous on a motorway, even trucks ( want to) drive faster.

You should be fine skippi, i dont think the psni have the "new fangled technology" capable of recording your details and sending a fine out later, unless its one of the speed camera vans.

And on the topic of R plates, they are indeed retarded. Im quite surprised you stick to the speed limit on them, none of the other ones seem to! 45mph on a motorway is just dangerous, you might as well be stopped in the middle of the lane compared to other drivers doing 80.

They should bring such a system in over here, for both Car & Bike imo.

They really shouldn't. It's a ridiculous system which clogs up the roads and causes a lot of drivers to perform unsafe overtakes on R drivers. Quite often you'll see articulated trucks overtaking an R driver on a single carraigeway A/B road followed by a line of traffic and there is inevitably frequent close calls with oncoming traffic.

I can see the potential for carnage - no pun intended! - from idiots, alas.

Currently, we have no way of knowing if the car in front has a complete noob or a seasoned pro behind the wheel which personally I don't think is right.

45 On a motorway? I'd missed that bit, thats not good.

R plates sound barmy, reading up people that get caught speeding on R plates seem to have the R's extended for a year. :o

it has to be posted out within 14 days, id give it a few more days before you are counting your chickens.. they can get away with it not being recieved till a few days after because of postage
