I want to take my normal backpack as well as my laptop in a laptop carry case. Will this be allowed? Has anyone ever tried it before? I don't see why it should be a problem, but I can also see how it could be.

I haven't actually got the laptop/carry case yet so I don't know if sticking it in my backpack will be an option, as it may not fit or I may need all the space in my backpack.

If it is a problem, is there anything I can do about it? I really don't want to stick a new laptop in my suitcase as they tend to get thrown around a little.

Thanks,

Phil.

It depends on the airline. I know that BA and BMI allow one piece of normal handluggage + a laptop so you should be fine with them. What airline are you flying with?

Qatar Airways. Thinking about it, it might be a good idea to call them and find out, but I'm guessing it might be down to the check-in person.

I just have to be careful not to get frustrated and say something stupid like 'What's the problem? It's not a bomb or anything!' :p

I'm flying on the 23rd of this month.

I appreciate the offer, it's very thoughtful, but I'm after more of a stand-alone laptop carry case. I also need a normal backpack for travelling around China on my days off work or whatever.

Still, that's very generous! :)

I'd imagine airlines should have a set policy for this, so it won't just be down to the whim of the person on check-in.

Agreed.

I cannot see anything on the Qatar airlines website about hand baggage so probably best to give them a call. I can't see it being a problem.

Currently people are able to take nothing apart from passport, wallet and medication... that situation may well be relaxed by your flight though. If not, long haul flights are going to be seriously boring!

It depends on the person checking you in and how busy the flight is. I've got away with a pretty big carry on bag before - but I often take my laptop bag and a small rucksack. Tbh I'm good at haggling and blagging so I've never ever had a problem.

This is all very silly.

It's been a while since I flew El-Al but I'm sure THEY allow hand luggage.

And just how many Israeli airliners have been blown out of the sky with smuggled on explosives in the last 25 years?

Very silly. Time they started thinking about security measures that might actually work rather than just messing with people's daily routines.

they were stating on the news this morning that the only things you'll be allowed to take on board are passport/travel doc's and medication, you wont even be allowed to take on a book or newspaper, they also stated that a mother taking on baby milk for a baby would have to sample it infront of an official (sp) to proove that it is what it's supposed to be.

They might as well just ground all the planes then. Not being able to take a laptop as carry on means (to most people) that they cannot take a laptop at all, because throwing it in luggage is comparable to throwing it out the window at 30,000 feet. It'll receive the same amount of damage.

So that pretty much makes business air travel a thing of the past.

Also you cannot run regular 35mm film through a baggage x-ray machine. So that means all vacation flights will go away because there's still a lot of people out there that use film rather than digital.

Pretty crippling to the airline industry......

Umm, they just did for all UK flights.

this appears/seems to be a temporary measure, I am sure it will only last for a few days, the airports could not cope with doing this all the time, people wouldn't travel and the airlines/airports would lose money.

I hope it only lasts for a few days, not travelling again till next year, and i don't agree with some of the things they are asking, like carrying your wallet in a clear bag? and no books. I can understand why, but this is OTT methinks

Lesser of two evils, sure you won't be able to read a book or use your laptop while flying, but it's another measure to safeguard your safety.

To all the people moaning about no hand lugauge on planes, I bet you'd all be complaining a damn site louder if a plane/s got blown out of the sky due to people smuggling explosives in hand lugauge

Don't blane the authorities for trying to protect you, blame the terrorist for trying to kill you

Fact is airlines can barely be trusted with one bit of luggage yet alone hand luggage as well.

My other half went Gatwick - Edinburgh and back again with a mate this weekend. Put her bag in next to her mates. Suffice to say my gf's bag never made it to Edingburgh but her friend's did.

On the way back her friend's bag reached Gatwich with a nice big tear in it.

Seems pretty poor to me tbh.

Point is they should check hand luggage not ban it completley (I thought they did this anyway?). No way I'd trust my valuables to the baggage handlers.
