"Handbag" + Hand luggage

Nobody can answer the OPs question until we know who he's flying with, from where and to where. The whole conversation is rather redundant until we know specifics.

I'm flying with Aurigny, from Guernsey to Gatwick - I'd be impressed if you could find specifics for the airline, I was asking more as a rule of thumb and by the sounds of it I should be safe with a man bag + hand luggage, even if I don't like the idea of carrying one!

Took me about 3 seconds and one click

Hand luggage
Hand luggage is restricted to 1 item per passenger - max dimensions 48cm x 36cm x 20cm, max weight 10kgs (Southampton-Alderney, Dinard-Guernsey and inter-island Trislander services 6kgs).

Weight in excess of these allowances will be treated as hold luggage and charged at the applicable Excess Baggage rates.

Carriers like BA that allow 2 items generally say so, e.g. if you read BA's here.

Failing all of that you could always pick up the phone and ask them..

I dont know if anyone's mentioned but even if it is written on their website/flight paperwork, it is ultimately down to the discretion of the airliner and can just deny you last minute.

Oh I have that information, my question lies in the technicality of carrying a handbag & hand luggage - a lot of airlines state one bag only yet seem to allow the handbag as a carry on item too. I suppose it's down to the airlines discretion on the day and how anal they are.

Every airline I've flown with that states 1 item of hand baggage, they mean exactly that, 1 item only. There are exceptions but these are outlined on the airlines website (e.g. Easyjet - 1 item only unless you are an Easyjet plus card holder or have paid for speedy boarding). The amount of time wasted at boarding with people trying to stuff one bag inside another as they haven't read the documentation or listened to the announcements is unreal. Most airlines are fairly anal about it. The only way you are likely to get the answer you are looking for is calling the airline. Even if you are lucky enough to find someone that has flown your route with Aurigny they'll be unlikely to give you an answer unless they are a regular flyer on that specific airline.

tbf and laptop bag or man bag is not actually luggage so you could argue it doesn't fall within the "hand luggage" restrictions, as I think OP is trying to do. I highly doubt the airline would refuse a woman's handbag in addition to a small suitcase, so why not a man bag...

But if you're in Guernsey drive to the airport and ask them, you can't be more than 15 minutes away wherever you are :p

Was just looking at Wizz Air flights..and you can take a small bag free on board...£16 for a normal sized hand luggage back..and £42!!! For a check in bag. All each way. Ridiculous prices.

Anyone well versed in BA's policies know if you can get away with a rolling suitcase that is perfectly cabin sized, plus a rucksack as your additional item? The rucksack would squash into the basket thing they use to check sizing..

put your rucksack in a duty free bag.

I don't see why airlines don't allow a second bag as long as it can fit under the seats....

It's the overhead space they always worry about, annoying as hell when someone tries to put there case above your seat because their own is full.

I just take them out and stick them on the floor to put my own in lol..

Actually it'll be my girlfriend with the rolling case and a small handbag. I'll have a holdall type bag and a rucksack. Surely that'd be ok, with regards to your point I always put my rucksack under the seat..

You realise the overhead locker space doesn't belong to you right? As in, the space above your seat is not specifically yours?

But common courtesy dictates you should use the space above your own seat, that's pretty obvious...

Yes, but if the space above you is full - exactly the situation arknor refers to - then you are going to have to put it elsewhere.
If you don't, the stewards and stewardesses happily will.

on my flights there is always room for 3 bags above the 3 seats, if someone's doesn't fit in there's then someone is taking the ****

sometimes when I've boarded I've watched people stick their case in the first overhead locker right next to the door then wander down the aisle to take their seat. like WTF?????

Has the potential to bring some excitement to a boring time in an airport and on a plane.
