Honestly with this thread and the battery booster thread you have to wonder just how so many of you are ending up with completely dead cars enough for this to be an issue.
It seems we're big on hypothetical situations the average person might go an entire lifetime of driving without encountering on this forum at the moment.
I'm sure you could come up with a hypothetical situation that explains why we shouldn't have automatic gearboxes, electric windows or even internal combustion engines at all.
My job is literally to think of ways out of 'what if' situations and either prevent them or work around them.
These hypothetical situations do occur and can be deadly.
There is an inherant danger and or risk in everything. Those risks should be eliminated where possible or minimised at the very least. Jaguar did that when they redesigned the electronic boot release that couldn't be opened without power
