Handbrake / Youtube Question.

Thanks for the info there. :)

Quick question : I thought I had an 8mb line, but does the fact that my recorded download speeds (above) mean that I don't? The highest seems to be 3.x mbps, though I have seen much more than that before - like when downloading from steam.

If you read the package details carefully it states "Up to 8mb", so the max possible speed is 8mb as that's the ADSL limit (8mb down/ 1mb up). However, you'll only see this speed if you're close to the exchange (where all the phonelines in the area is connected to). The further you are away from it, the lower your actual speed is.

TalkTalk in overcongested areas can also suffer from being slowed down by other TalkTalk users in the area, and speed capping during peak times. They are cheap for a reason, they don't invest into the network enough to handle all those users.

Might be best to switch to someone like Plusnet, and hopefully they'll also move you to an ADSL2+ package if you can't get fibre, as that should hopefully boost your speed up a bit (24mb down/1mb up). But like ADSL, it is also affected by distance: http://www.ispreview.co.uk/images/broadband/adsl2.gif

Thanks, Orcvader. I live very close to my local exchange, so that's a bonus. :)

lol...currently still uploading a 1hr 15min video (360p) to youtube...started uploading at around 4am. :D

I can't have this.

If you've got a mobile phone you can tether to, and a decent phone signal, then you'll get far superior upload speeds that way (even if you had internet with a decent upload speed).

ADSL2 won't be of any use if the OP is syncing at less than half the ADSL rate. He should check the FTTC availability.

I've just had a look. I tested my telephone number and this is what came up :

Talktalk adsl is always pretty poor. I assume their fibre is much better or we'd see complaints about it

I hope there won't be a disruption to my internet, and that it doesn't cost a small fortune. :)

For me, I only had around 2 hours downtime when moving to FTTC, but that was with BT to BT. That 20mb upload will help your video uploads a lot, it should get those huge videos up on YouTube a lot faster.

My downtime was literally about 5 minutes whilst the engineer put the OpenReach box in.

Went from Broadband to Fibre and it worked out £5 cheaper p/month taking out new package etc.
