handwriting

I'm actually peeved by this.

My university only accepts typed essays/reports etc, but expect after a year of literally no writing, us to all write great essays.

I'm panicking a lot. My handwriting is absolutely dire, I'm certain to be penalised. :(

I think a question here is whether children are taught to touch type, and if they will be, will it run along side conventional writing lessons.

I think it's about time they did this.

Writing maths is pretty much impossible to do at any sort of speed on a computer. Writing by hand will stay if just for that.

Though it would be quite funny if in the future, the only people who write English by hand regularly are scientists and engineers

You can do it using Latex, but it takes a while to get used to.
In fact nearly all maths papers are done in Latex now, but I really can't envisage teaching 5 year olds to use latex.

I use latex without fail for all of my uni coursework, but when I'm taking/writing up notes pen and paper is much better imo :)

I do Latex when I want something to look posh, but doing the actual mathematics on it would be a nightmare. Do you honestly use it when trying to prove something or solve an equation?

I just do it when doing coursework, lab reports etc to be handed in, but all my course notes/tutorials are just hand written.

This. Unless you're writing it up for a coursework/project and it's a ****-easy proof, it's just so much easier to write it down and then type up the 'outline' in Latex.

It's a really quick and convenient method for maths, sure. But it's certainly nowhere near as fast as pen and paper.
