Hanns-G Flicker

Hi guys,
Been having a bit of an issue with my new 28" Hanns-G and I was hoping for some advice.

Basically only had this about a week, and after 3-4 days I noticed that there was a certain amount of "flicker" (that's the best way I can describe it) in darker scenes in games (specifically Far Cry 2). It's like a subtler version of the flicker you can see when computer monitors appear in video footage on tv. But it's quite pronounced now, and I certainly notice it whenever the screen is dark in-game. It's not noticeable when the scenes are lighter, or noticeable in desktop/ordinary browsing.

Booting up Paint and doing a screen-fill with a dark colour, I can't really see any flickering.

Is this therefore an issue with the refresh rates in Far Cry and V-syncing or whatever, or is it a problem with the screen itself? Am I being oversensitive here or is it an RMA issue? It is getting really quite bothersome in Far Cry 2, but I don't know whether this is just an issue of the screen's 60Hz refresh rate and I'm just supposed to lump it, the consequence of having 28" of desktop for £260.

Advice?

It's not the 60hz refresh rate - LCD's are different to CRT's, you need a high refresh rate on a CRT because the phosphor coating on the glass only stays "lit" for a miniscule amount of time before fading, hence, the slower the refresh the more flicker.

Your flicker is probably the backlight (CCLF can only be dimmed by rapidly switching them on and off), if it only happens in dark scenes I would wager some sort of Dynamic Contrast Ratio is at play to try and improve the specs of the monitor from a marketing viewpoint. Turn that off if possible and the flickering should stop.

And yes, £260 for a 28" monitor is very much a case of "you get what you pay for" I'm afraid.

I had this then the backlight started to go on and off, tried a different cable and even a different GFX card to no avail

Rang Hanns-G for an RMA 2 weeks ago and they granted a swap but im still waiting for stock to arrive to replace mine with. Cant say im too impressed tbh as ive had to buy a new TFT in the hope of flogging the RMA replacement

I have the same problem with my both my x1950 pros, in single mode or in crossfire. The screen is a 19" LG hdtv working with a dvi -> hdmi cable, and the problem only occurs ( so far) in UT3 at the bottom and right edge, while I'm playing.

That's why I'm getting a proper monitor for xmas...guess it won't be the Hanns-G :(

edit: Have played around with monitor, and it still occurs with 'dynamic mode' off

Thanks for input so far guys. I've installed Fallout 3 today and can confirm that I am also seeing a tiny amount of flicker there, but it's in the most limited situations - the screen has to be predomintantly in grey or brown tones, near-dark but not very dark - whenever the screen is even reasonably bright, or it's properly dark, it cannot be seen.

Sounds to me like it's one of those things. Probably the backlight. I'll try switched the input to the HDMI to see if anything improves there. And to confirm, I've not been using the "X-Contrast" Dynamic contrast option.

In all other respects I am delighted with the monitor for the money. If it's the only drawback I have to face, it's more than liveable-with.

Sorry to resurrect this, but thought I'd give an update for anyone else who'd had a similar issue with the Hanns-G or other screens.

I had the monitor connected via the VGA input, with a very old VGA cable with a DVI adaptor at the other end to fit my GFX card. I swapped to the HDMI input, using the HDMI-DVI cable supplied with the monitor, and there was absolutely no flicker whatsover.

Guess the old cable, or perhaps just the VGA input itself, was giving a rubbish signal. Recommend trying the other inputs for anyone having similar problems.
