Happy Birthday MS-DOS

Echo Hip hip horray

On another note, what a pain in the arse it was to try and get Doom running, gotta love the dos memory management

I'm running Win 7 here, but I still prefer a DOS box for some programs e.g. unrar for RAR archives, Hjsplit for splitting files. And of course DOS is still essential for some network diagnostics like ipconfig and ping.

As for real mode DOS, probably up until last year when I finally sold an old Win 98 PC.

Only to find the 12th disk was corrupt...:rolleyes:

Surely disk 19...

I don't miss those days, it used to take a couple of hours of floppy swapping to install Office...

Having said that, Dos was a great way of imposing a test upon would be PC gamers.
Can you get X working with Sound, CD and Mouse support?
If not you're not a PC gamer...

I miss "mem" as well... but it wasn't all mem you were interested in.. conventional memory? Something really really annoying you had to have enough of

Support may be dead, but if you have a copy, you can still use it. They didn't even bother with license keys back then.

My PC experience started with DOS 3 and Windows 1. Am I showing my age? :D

Yes, I remember windows 3.1

Edit - actually looking at screen shots I remember 2.x but not 1.x
