Happy International Amiga Day!

I think some people are missing the point. Todays games have better graphics, sound, etc. but then they have better hardware to play on. The key thing that's missing in most of todays games is gameplay. Programmers aren't challenged as there are no real restraints when programming for a PC game. They just change the specifications to say it needs 8GB RAM or a 980 or such like.

In days gone by the programmers were constrained. They had a finite amount of resource and once they were out then that was it. I still play C64 and Amiga games because I can't find anything on the PC that holds a torch to games like Bubble Bobble, Bloodwych, Dungeon Master, Turrican 2, SWoS, Kick Off 2, Flimbos Quest, Rainbow Islands, IK+, etc.

I love retro games because it points to a time where by people had full free reign and had to do very clever things. Pushing the boundaries. It was none of this BF4 now with premium addon, guaranteed to be unplayable on release. There was no patching (Amiga had some but very late on). It had people making software such as WHDLoad making it easier to get your games on a hard-drive.

I could go on and on :)

This still applies to Codemasters. Who supply one - three patches before they move on to the next game. Look at the amount of games that come with launch day patches.

to be fair the patches are a result of the games being more complex these days

the advantage in the past was that it was more of a cottage industry - small teams/companies could be much more creative and/or take risks with games

To be fair? There is also a lot of laziness and deadlines most can't meet. All the cutting corners to meet the deadlines. Not all are like this but there is a lot. Some games out there don't even get any patches and the games are busted.

Did anyone play Moonstone and actually complete it? The game was going for a fortune on eBay a while ago. Was it any good or am I imagining it to be better than it was?

Had an Amiga 500 with the 1/2 MB upgrade kit (think it was that)

everyone else was off playing with an Italian plumber or a blue hedgehog,

All the while I was playing

Monkey Island
Simon the Sorcerer
Flight of the Amazon
Indiana Jones
With some Pinball fantasy, Desert Strike, Zool, Super Frog and Cannon Fodder thrown in.

Glory days of my youth :D

I had an Amiga 600 and my brother had a 1200 but I got rid of it at some point can't remember why or what for. I have a CD32 now which has plenty of dodge compilation game CDs which means no disk swapping, perfect :)

For me the most stand out game on the Amiga was hired guns, a dungeon master type of game with guns in space but it had so much atmosphere and was so much fun to play, not quite so much fun to play if you only had a single floppy drive though.

Other stand out titles for me were...

Spindizzy Worlds - One of the first copied games we had, such a huge world, great puzzles.

Turrican 1 & 2 - Music that still stands up today along with great gameplay and graphics.

Stunt car racer - We used to play this over a null modem cable between the amigas.

Escape for colditz - A great isometric game with that get a little further each go thing going on.

Hunter - Can't believe this hasn't been mentioned. This blew my mind when I first saw it, a true open 3d (ish) world with vehicles.

Midnight Resistance - One of the best versions of the game, 2 player too which I don't think the megadrive version had.

Twintris - Great 2 player tetris game with great music

Gravity force / Power - I think this came on an Amiga power cover disk and also in the CD32 magazine, a great 2 player thrust clone with crazy weapons, way more fun than it should have been.

Sword of Sodan - Sure it plays like arse but back in the day when you saw sprites that big with speach in game it was pretty impressive.

Other stuff
Shufflepuck cafe
Super Hang On
Quak
Menace
Xenon 2
Leander
Gloom
Disposable Hero

Also have to mention the shadow of the beast games. Sure 1 and 2 were both insanely difficult but seeing those graphics with that audio on a 512K system was pretty impressive. I hadn't seen anything like the intro to beast 2 at the time. Great system :)
