We see lots of threads by people with poor connections and slow connection speeds but never really anyone with good things to say.

I was with Virgin Media before and NTL before that, my parents have an Orange connection. Orange is stupidly slow, 2mb and my dad pays £17 a month just for the net. Virgin media was ok but their customer service was shocking and they tried to make me pay for a new set top box because we were using an old one, even though they gave us it in the first place. They were going to charge my card so I cancelled, they said my card would still have to be charged so I cancelled the direct debit to them, then wrote to the MD about the level of service (I had no reply but they stopped pestering me)

I am now with Sky on the max package. Customer service is good, still not excellent by a long shot but a lot better and you can actually talk to someone who knows what they are on about. In a year we have only had 2 disconnections at 12am, so maintenance maybe. Its a 20mb package and it now connects at 18mb, with a download speed of 2mbps through ethernet. No download cap however rapidshare has refused to work a couple of times after big download sessions, I rang and spoke to Sky who said they do not block any IPs. Once I added rapidshare ips to my hosts file all was ok.

Are you happy with your providers customer service, speed and stability of connection?

I have been using BE* and o2 for about 4 years now and have nothing but good things to say. No slowdowns, traffic shaping, usage caps, just a good consistently stable connection.

I've had cable since it got laid in my street years ago, can't fault it.

I've been with Zen for years and have been most satisfied with connection speed and customer service. I pay £17.99 a month on their basic Pay As You Go broadband package, and get speeds of 6.5Mbps+.

Rgds

Forgot to say, the Sky package we have is £60 a month for Sky plus, sports, 3 variety packs - music, documentary, entertainment, Phone line and Sky 20mb net.

Generally it seems that the more you pay for internet with smaller companies, the better customer service you get

I pay 31 quid for 10meg BB Bobby basic TV pack & House phone.
In the last 5 years I've probably had 3 outs the longest lasting about an Hour. :p
Customer service ! Who needs it ? :p

With o2 on their Premium service, though only paying £10 pm as an o2 customer with my mobile. Get a steady 1.5/1.8mb down at any time of the day, ping is nice and low, pretty good for games (though still occaisionaly have server troubles with Bad Company, though with the state of that game sometimes I'm not about to chalk it up entirely to the connection). May have to restart the router once every few weeks when it falls over it's own shoelaces but it's hardly an inconvinience.

All said, incredibly happy with the service :)

(o2 Premium at my girlfriends flat in London however, is freaking useless)

I was with NTL/Virgin Media for years and with Zen before that. Zen was good for the time. NTL was fine. However Vitgin Media has been on a slow downward spiral. Too many customers here on Derbys aging infrastructure and their traffic shaping and peak time slowdowns have become a joke.

The man from OpenReach is installing the phone line and as soon as he has done I'm having BE Internet installed. I really need a decent upload and stable download speed. Oh and no Goddamn traffic shaping.

i have a theoretical 24 meg connection but i get max around 8meg

other than the router crapping out every so often (once a day atm) will need to get a better one shortly

i have 0 complaints as my connection has never gone down and have never suffered any shaping atall

oh im on Be

For speed, i think VM offer just about the best, but i don't think anyone can ever rave about the customer services. However, mine has rarely failed on me, so i've not had to ring them up very often. Traffic shaping is an issue though....and i don't download much at all.

Im with BT, have been for about 15 years. I get about 7Mb down and have never ever had a problem. I don't get disconnected, never get capped etc. I havn't had to deal with their Customer Services because it has never broken so all in all I'm happy.

I do know how terrible BT are in general as I deal with them heavily with work but for my home line it has been flawless

Similar boat, the only time I've ever had to contact BT was to get my package upgraded to Option 3 from some ancient legacy package. Never had any faults with the broadband (it did go down for a day or so when a tree fell on the line due to bad weather, but it was fixed sharpish). Reasonable speeds for living in the countryside on a small village exchange (4mb-ish), never get throttled or dicked over. Very happy with it, but still thinking of switching to Plusnet, just for a change.

I can't fault my ISP.

We use Ziggo here in The Netherlands and have been using them for about 5 years. (my wife used then a lot of years before that)

When we signed up it was for a 12 meg package. 6 months later it was upgraded to 24 meg at no further cost to us and we have just been informed that at some point in the next 3 months we will recieve another upgrade to 50 meg, again at no further cost to us.

We get our net, our digital tv (65 normal channels and 3 adult included) and our phone and it costs us 65 Euro a month (that's 56 pound) which we think is very good considering we have no useage caps and we can basically do whatever we want with the connection and they don't complain.

Customer service is great as well. the couple of times we have had a problem they were very professional and helpfull and always able to speak english since I don't speak dutch.

I was with Cableinet/Telewest/Blueyonder/Virgin Media for 10+ years, Really good connection with them until 2 years ago, it started going down the drain slow speeds, Connection dropping from games, Connection going down for days on end. Had lots of engineers out who replaced my stuff god knows how many times, Finally gave up in the end after 8 years of great service.

Moved to Sky Unlimited in July last year, I was only expecting 5.0Mb from them, Ended up with 13Mb in the end, I've had 2 disconnections like yourself for about 20 seconds.

The Service is great, Completely rock solid connection, Great pings & Download speeds of 1.3Mb/s 24/7. I've only had to deal with the customer services once & that was to get my line synced at the max my line could handle took about 5 Minutes.

All in all I'm very happy with the service Sky supply, It is so much better than my cable connection had been in the last 2 years with Virgin.

ADSL: Best ISP I've dealt with by far is AAISP. I simply can not fault them in any way and find they are so much better than any others I've tried. But they are a more specialist ISP and you do (in some cases) pay more for that.

I moved from Plusnet (and all the hell that brought and continued to bring 2 years after I left them) and I actually paid less than Plusnet and got more for my money.

Sadly ADSL is not a real option for me anymore after my line deteriorated to next to useless so I moved to Virgin. I've only needed to contact Customer Services 3 times (2 times for them to correct issues they caused and 1 for sort out something I did). Each time they were on the ball and sorted the issue on the phone or email.
Not had to call them to "complain" or get "technical" help (touch wood) so I've been really lucky. From what I can tell you either get a faultless service or a dire one from Virgin.

Sky Unlimited here been with them nearly a year, can't complain at all, 3 PC's online we all game, etc, no problem's at all.

Using their Sagem router rock solid, was with BT 4Mb > Sky 7MB D/STRM 864 UP/STRM, use bbc.co.uk to check my ping every now and again Ave 24.

Plus they have just reduced their prices from the 1st june Sky Umlimited to £7.50, Sky Talk also by £2.50. Will be renewing my Sky Package contract, very good service all round.:)

Be* here and in my last flat and at work...

Haven't had any problems per se, get 16meg here, 17 at work and i think 18 at my old place.

I do have an issue meaning there is lots of noise on the line intermittantly in the mornings which i haven't got round to getting sorted yet - already had one pair swap on the BT multicore between the cab and the exchange. It's not an ISP problem it's a physical wire/BT problem which also affects the voice service.

Been with virgin for 4 years now, on their 50Mb connection (38-42 in reality), and barring the router soiling the bed every now and then, I'm really happy with it. Low latencies, good DL speeds, reliable. Occasional issues, but in the whole they're sorted quickly. :)
