If I have a hard disc which is detected on my PC, shown in device manager on Vista and shown correctly in BIOS, why would it be not detected as a disc drive for use in windows explorer?

I'm talking about an old PS3 40GB 2.5" SATA drive which I intended to use as a backup drive for documents, photos and music. Seems a waste to not use it!

You need to partition and format it

Control panel > admin tools> computer management > disk management
locate the new drive (make sure it's the new one ;)) and partition/format it

i have the same problem. Tried Control panel > admin tools> computer management > disk management but when i right click it doesnt give me the option to format it - and it detected in bios as well.

What can i do?

sounds like you both need to create a partition on the hdd then format it.
go to computer management right click on the disk and create one then format.

But i dont get the option to create a partition when i right click on the drive - all options are greyed out for me.

You might need initialise the drive before being able to format it. This is rare, but I've seen it a few times.

In the bottom pane, the one that shows the disk 0, disk 1, CD-Rom 0 etc right click the item and click initialise.

Hope this helps.

I had this problem with my last HDD. I ended up having to boot off the Vista CD and format the drive from the install process.
