I'm trying to get an accurate bench of my sata drives speed so I took a look at www.tomshardware.com to see what benchmark tool they use as them seem pretty anal about being exact and i expect then tested a lot of tools before selected the benchmark program they did. They used h2benchw version 3.6 in there hard drive charts here:
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/storage/charts.html
So i downloaded that and gave it a blast. It took about an hour to run and read the whole drive so I assume it is thorough. Here are the results on a clean install of XP using 2 x seagate 7200.10 x 160GB 8MB cache in Raid 0 config using native IDE and Intel ICH9R (on a GA_P35_DS3P / e4300)
H2benchw3.6, HDTach, HDTune
Min read speed: 72.6 , 72 , 70.9
Avg Read speed: 104 , 112.2 , 91.1
Max read speed: 112.4 , 130 , 97.1
It seems to fit in nicely if HDTach over estimates read speeds and HDTune under estimates them. I'm going to use HDbenchw from now on and assume that is accurate; at least it will enable me to compare results with tomshardware.
If these results are correct, it would seem that people using HDTach are being given very high read speeds and people using HDTune are getting read speeds a little lower than they should.
I'm going to try the gigabyte raid now and see what that gives me.
Should we all use H2benchw3.6 or is it pants for some reason?
Comments welcome
