Hard Disk Corrupt - Recovery

Is it your boot drive? if so connect to another machine if possible. My favourite program for recovering hard drives is easy recovery pro. If you have bad sectors try HDD Regenerator. Easy recovery pro is very expensive, I can't provide a link for a torrent though as that would be Illegal. :p

Is Easy Recovery Pro made by ontrack? If so I have tried that without any success.

The HDD is a customers'.

Viewed in explorer are files and folders, none accesible and all named of random characters.

yes, thats the one. If that won't work I think you're trouble with this one. It sounds like the disc is seriously dying. Ask the customer how much the data is worth to them. Professional recovery will be at least 500 quid.

I have used Active@ products a number of times with pretty good success. They let you try out demos first to see if they will work, and then purchase is pretty cheap for what they do.

In fact I once used this on a completely FUBAR'd WinME FAT32 disk. Managed to recover an amazing amount of data with it. Okay - most of it ended up being files named without extensions, but it did mean that the customer could load things up in Word and find his missing work. He could also load up the files into a graphics package to sort out his missng JPEG photos. (Though this also managed to reveal all the pr0n the son had been viewing as it retrieved deleted data from as far back as three years earlier!!)

BTW - you will also need a second empty hard disk (or big area free somewhere) to recover everything to...
